K&L German Tasting

An excellent tasting of wines from Germany. Some Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Riesling of all sweetness levels, some aged and some young. An excellent experience for me, since I'm still learning about the regions. Overall the wines fit my palate style well and I would love to have almost any with dinner, though the rieslings stole the show. Excellent QPR and aging ability.

  Lighter colored, almost like a rose, great strawberry on the nose; palate has good structure, great red fruit, hint of smoke. Decanted 3 hours, will improve in the cellar at least a couple of years. 90+

  Plums, palate has ripe fruit; palate has great balance but also ripeness, some dark fruit. Like a very balanced but californian pinot. Will likely improve for a few years in the cellar. 90+

  Creamy buttery nose; more balanced on the palate. Not flabby but has a very short finish. Average wine, not my style.

• 2009 Erben von Beulwitz Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett 89 Points

  Very lightly colored, almost watery clear. Nose is floral, fruity, smells a bit sweet. Palate has a lot of residual sugar (esp for a Kabinett), peach, white fruit. Ready to drink now, not one to cellar because it is a bit low in acid. However, excellent today.

  Less aromatic. clean nose, some residual sugar, very well balanced without overbearing acidity. Lovely peaches and pear. Can age a few years.

  Complex, some botrytis funkiness, great fruit on the nose, same on palate. Very balanced on the midpalate, moderate length finish. An excellent wine especially at the $19 price for a decade old riesling auslese. Deal of the tasting. 91-92

  Nose has fennel, baked bread spices, but very young on the palate with some minerality as well as fruit. Balanced, good acid, medium finish. Complex and has some aging left to do. 90+

• 2009 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 93 Points

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  A lot of subtle complexity on the nose, fruit and minerality. Lovely balance, sweetness with peachy fruit and some tangerine. Long finish. Needs a lot of time to develop complexity. 92-93++ with potential for much improvement.
