Some good wines amongst the reds

  • 2009 Grand Bateau

    France, Bordeaux

    Medium ruby. Cherry and smoke. Light weight, some roundness imparted by wood, decent acid, fairly easy although some tannin at the end. Good lighter style generic Bordeaux.

  • 2009 Château Busquet

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lussac Saint-Émilion

    Light color. Clean, light, herbal style. OK but little discernible fruit or breadth of flavor.

  • 2007 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron Les Tourelles de Longueville

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Dark ruby. Reduced nose. Medium weight but deep, classic Cabernet flavors. Cedary, roundly tannic, average acidity. Well made wine here, impressive both for the vintage and the fact that it is a second wine of the property.

  • 2005 Château Carbonnieux

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Deep center with lighter edge. Light weight. Herbal, dry with tannic finish, excellent acidity but this lacks the fruit and flesh to balance.

  • 2005 Clos du Marquis

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Medium ruby. Cedary. Subtle sweetness and cassis fruit. Most impressive for its back end with terrific grip, tannin and acidity that really explode as it coats the mouth. Long, classic, one for the future. Probably my favorite wine of the tasting.

  • 2005 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Deep ruby. Closed but some creosote and anise-one of those wines where you'd swear that you can actually smell the tannins. Dry but incredible extract and underlying blackberry confit. Long with ripe, round tannins and some perceptible wood which will surely be absorbed over time. Outstanding potential but it must be decades away from maturity. Despite this, it is not too severe to taste and appreciate now, which is quite different than old style St. Estephes.

  • 2004 Château Hosanna

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Medium color, light edge. Quite perfumed with some high toned secondary notes. Elegant right bank style with green tones, woody base. Unfortunately, it comes across as diffuse in the mouth with a finish that fades much too rapidly. An underperformer at this lofty price.

  • 2000 Château Lanessan

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Medium ruby with some fading at the rim. Olive aromatics. Green but not underripe flavors. Dry, pleasing weight and feel, some austerity on the finish. Maturing and very good value.

Flight 3 - Sauternes (1 Note)

  • 2007 Château de Fargues

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Lush apricot nose, little botrytis. Some wood that is held in check. One dimensional now but the acidity worms it way to the surface late and renders it more lively.
