Introduction

Single blind tasting of five of the 2004 Two Hands Garden series wines with a double blind '05 Ares thrown into the mix.

  • 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Max's Garden 90 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote

    Tasted single blind. The nose showed deep fruit, spice and integrated oak. Oak and tart fruit on the palate. Not too big. The finish is fairly long with more tart fruit.

  • 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Samantha's Garden 91 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

    Tasted single blind. Nose of anise, blackberry and some raisin (without the sense of being cooked). The palate showed plenty of blackberry and tart fruit.

  • 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Lily's Garden 92 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Tasted single blind. Complex nose with black cherry and coffee highlights. Bright, tart fruit on the palate. Showing some maturity and restraint. Lingering finish.

  • 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Bella's Garden 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Tasted single blind. Funky nose but lends itself to some complexity. There is nice fruit within the funky elements and a lingering finish. Surprised to find out this was Bella's.

  • 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Sophie's Garden 89 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Padthaway

    Tasted single blind. Pretty nose. Straightforward fruit on the palate. Shortest finish of the night. Still very good.

  • 2005 Two Hands Shiraz Ares 93 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Tasted double blind (the other wines were single blind). Full and powerful nose. Silky palate. Caramel, bright blackberry, acidity and a long finish. Impressive. My wine of the event.

Closing

The event was well anticipated and a lot of fun. Some people had a hard time finding distinguishing features but I thought these wines were quite different. Opinions were mixed but the Ares was generally the favorite and the Bella's came across as atypical, though liked by some.
