Burgundy 2011 Day 2: Lunch at Bistrot Grand Cru in William Fevre

A traditional Chablisienne lunch in a warm, sun-lit courtyard. This was when we all felt that we were really on holiday. A lovely fish stew, some escargots and a superb creme brulee later, we were ready to hit the road again.

  Boy, this was disappointing. Nose was very tight, some cream, earth, mushrooms all a bit reserved. The palate had a nice cleanness to it, with bright acidity and lots of juiciness. There was tons of weight and power on the attack, but the wine was so fresh and juicy that you do not notice it. Unfortunately, it was very truncated, all acid and lemony fruit, some melted butter and barely anything else past the midpalate. Absolutely no sign of the early promise we tasted in say the 2007 La Chablisienne Grenouilles. Such a let down after previous vintages of Fevre's Les Clos and the sterling reviews that the 2007 bottting has been receving in particular. Served blind, nobody could place what on earth it was. In fact, the bottle of straight Fevre Chablis that we had immediately after showed about as well as this did. We thought the wine might be flawed at first, but coming straight from Fevre's cellars as this bottle probably did, that would have been a tragedy.

• 2009 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 88 Points

  Very decent for a straight Chablis. Very flowery nose, with yellow fruit and peach scents at the rear. The palate was nice and clean, but still showed some of therichness of the vintage with more yellow fruit and peachy notes. Simple, but very pleasant, with a nice freshness that made it a great pairing with our food.
