Tasting some forgotten burgundy with friends

Our friends at the Twisted Vine got ahold of some older vintage burgundies in a local importers warehouse and the fun began.

• 1996 Roux Père & Fils Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères 85 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

  gold color, nose mostly secondary aromas without much fruit evident. this carried onto the palate which had soft creamy flavors buoyed by light acids. not much finish.

• 1986 Pierre André au Château de Corton André Côte de Nuits Villages 86 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

  color ruby with bricking. very light cherry/cranberry nose that evolved to cola. palate started soft and finished fine. not much fruit evident, but pleasant enough. seemed to fall off later to fairly flavorless. i don't expect that this has long to live

  gold color. nose showing mostly sharp acid. palate soft secondary flavors that finished long and pleasant. after an hour the bottom fell out of this and it seemed lean and monolithic.

• 1988 Lupé-Cholet Bâtard-Montrachet 88 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

  golden color, nose showed spices, melon and later nuts and maybe a whiff of cured meat. on the palate, this showed an acid bite that carried into the finish. there were notes of green apple skin on the palate. this was somewhat reminiscent of older chablis and i would have loved to taste this 20 yrs ago.

• 1988 Lupé-Cholet Montrachet 89 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

  color dark gold. nose was all secondary to me. palate started heavy and without anough acid to support this weight, but came on later shedding its flab and the acid gave it a laser-like focus. very impressive

  color garnet. nose showing mostly cola and spice. lean on the palate and finish. not pleasant. way done.

  color ruby with light bricking. nose showed mostly secondary aromas and iodine. the palate was dense with flavor, had good weight and a medium long finish. this was fun to drink.

  color ruby with bricking. nose shows cola and some celery? palate with cola and secondary flavors, med weight and med finish. if you have it drink soon.

All in all very fun to drink some older vintages among friends. perhaps not surprisingly most of these would have benefited from a food pairing.
