Introduction

Huge thanks to Julian Mayor and David Metz, the sommeliers at Bourbon Steak, for fantastic service and great wine suggestions. (We brought the Clouds Rest and Outpost, and purchased the Burgundy and Amarone. Julian also comped us glasses of the 2010 Vie Vite Extraordinaire Rose.) Headed there with two friends to celebrate my birthday.

  • 2007 Jean Noel Gagnard Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Sous Eguisons Blanc 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

    Nose has tons of lime and lemon, with a hint of Asian pear. On the palate, tons of front of mouth acidity, same lime/lemon/asian pear, and a super interesting peanut shell note towards finish. Mouth-watering acidity throughout. Extremely light and crisp. Hint of buttered popcorn on nose. Great minerality. Excellent.

  • 2003 Clouds Rest Pinot Noir 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Nose begins with super bright, sweet red cherries and sweet red raspberries. No blue or black fruits. On the palate, the same, but even sweeter -- raspberry pie, strawberries, smuckers raspberry jam, and some vanilla. Soft tannins, juicy, great mouth feel, incredibly long finish. What's most interesting as that everything tastes like sweet fruits, but this ISN'T over the top. Nothing is overripe; none of the fruits are big or dark, it's not syrupy, etc.

  • 2006 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

    The nose on this is explosive -- blackberries, tons of deep, dark chocolate, casis. Incredibly aromatic. A hint of the oak monster, but barely noticeable. On the palate, this coats the mouth. Huge, gripping tannins that settle perfectly throughout. Finishes with juicier, redder fruits than I would have expected. Nice acidity at very back end. Pretty close to perfect -- nothing is overripe, and nothing underripe, herbaceous, or awkward. Good mouthfeel -- not too heavy.

  • 2006 Giuseppe Lonardi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 91 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    Nose smells of dust, dried cherries and cranberries, prunes, bitter dark chocolate, wild herbs, river bed. Palate is the same, but with the addition of nutmeg, allspice, and other baking spices, especially in the mid-palate. Not remotely syrupy or overripe. Surprising minerality and acidity. Elegant. A great Amarone.
