Introduction

Dominc organised this tasting for a couple of guys in New York after I posted on the Forum that I had an evening to waste in New York. Thanks a lot for all the effort to organize and thanks to everyone for the great wines you brought. it was the classic balance: Great food, great wine and great company

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2004 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang 87 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

This was served too cold at the beginning and was dominated by lemon, light bitterness then it opened up as it got warmer and the lemon turned in to beautiful lemon zests, hint of vanilla and walnuts and was much more full bodied.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1988 Château L'Arrosée 86 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Beautiful nose, Porcini mushrooms, leather, fruit unfortunately the palate does not hold up to the sensational nose with notes of forest floor, little fruit and rather short finish. Drink this wine now

  • 1988 Château Montrose 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

At first I liked this wine better than the Arrosée and rated it 88 as it was fatter, had a light sweetness, cassis, BBQ smoked ribs, and had a longer finish. But after about 1 hour in the decanter the wine fell apart, but not in a classical sense, the tanins got really harsh and the wine lost it's charm. I'm not sure what to make out of this. if you want to drink it now, I'd say splash decant right before drinking but deducting from my very old Montrose I have had that this might become a fantastic wine one day, but we're talking another 20 years in bottle in perfect storage conditions...
I like the wine as it's a challenge but my rating isn't too high for the taste it right now experience

  • 1986 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This was my wine of the night. It had a lot of fruit, a sort of jump in your face fruit. I smelled chamomille, but after consulting Jeff our Tea expert, I withdrew my statement and we agreed that it was floral but not chamomile, as it lacked honeysuckle notes (which it did lack). Long finish, very complex and enjoyable throughout the entire evening, great!

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 90 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Lots of berries, mostly blackberries, blueberries. Tons of tannin, this one is way too young. It has some great notes of pork that was smoked with some mix of herbs and wood. This reminds me of Brian Stoner! Good stuff, but you need to be patient, give it another 5 years at least!

  • 1998 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

I rated this lower than I have before. I blame it on the intercontinental travel that it had to do the same day. Don't get me wrong, it was still a fantastic wine, but not as mind-boggling as in previous tastings. Dense, fat, herbs, curry leaves. It felt as if it was a boxer that just woke up after a siesta...

  • 1999 Ridge Monte Bello 90 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Leather, brown sugar, tar, round eucalyptus. It's always a pleasure to taste a Monte Bello, as these wines are so well made and have their own very distinctive characteristics. Thanks, Dominic for bringing this beauty!

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Filhot 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

This wine started out as a 82 points wine. We just opened it and it had quince and was rather light. Only after about 1 hour opened, it started to gain some fat, nuts and a the classic botrytis almonds taste. This wine needs so much air, I would decant it for three hours before tasting and not drink it too cold!

  • 1975 Quady Winery Vintage Port 89 Points

    USA, California

Tons of raisins and as such reminded me of a tokay, very sweet nose, french forest honey, nuts. Very good and at a perfect drinking window!
