  • 1999 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Dark golden color. Slightly oxidized. A mix of Whiskey and flowers on the nose. The palate showed better with sweet, full mouth-feel of citrus fruits and grilled nuts. As it sat it became more candied on the nose but hard to get through the odd liquor notes.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Consistent with my previous notes with the difference being that this bottle had a bit more stem aromas. Black fruits, smoked meats, wet earth and spice. Rich, full mouth feel, sweet black cherries, pretty tannins.

  • 1999 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

An extremely dense and huge nose of black fruits, cherry cough syrup, earth and toasty oak. The depth of the nose followed through on the palate with lush, sappy red and black fruit flavors supported with fresh acidity and beefy yet elegant tannins. If you like them big, bold and plush, then this is the wine for you. Very fun wine and hard not to like even for the purist in the bunch.

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Spicy nose of black fruits with a hint of smoked meat. Spicy red fruit, med-bodied palate. Good amount of tannins still present that once resolved the fruit should become even sweeter. A good Suchots in the making.

  • 1999 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Bright red fruit, raspberries, earth and spice on the nose. The palate also showed a core of bright red fruits, medium body mouth-feel with solid structure. Elegant overall but still a baby. Put this on the back burner for a least 5+ years before opening hence my conservative score.

  • 1999 Bouchard Père et Fils La Romanée 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru

Typical Vosne nose, incense, Asian spices, warm earth. The palate was full bodied, plummy and spicy. What struck me was the amount of wood still on the front end and the firmness on the back-end that makes me uncertain how it will further integrate over time.

  • 1999 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Yes I had the pleasure of sampling this wine twice within a week. Notes consistent with my June 17th posting below:

Super rich black fruit, floral, spices, smoke and dark cocoa on the nose. The palate was huge, sappy and simply delicious. A mix of sweet black cherries and dark plums. Fresh acidity with solid tannins that should integrate nicely in years to come. Hits on all cylinders.

  • 1999 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Sweet red cherries, ripe raspberries and mild cocoa notes on the nose. Rich red fruits, plush mid-palate intensity that kept going and going. Elegant and sophisticated. Drinking great right now.

  • 1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

The nose showed black cherry, dusty cocoa, toasty oak and warm earth. Medium-bodied with moderate tannin structure. The overall palate seemed somewhat lacking in complexity compared to other great Vogue vintages. I must admit I had high hopes and was really looking forward to sampling this bottle but was overall disappointed.
