Introduction

Wines were tasted double blind in random flights. Each flight is tasted, discussed, and revealed prior to moving on to the next flight.

Flight 1 - I. Warm up whites. (4 Notes)

  • 2009 Plantagenet Sauvignon Blanc Omrah 89 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    Pale, almost colorless. Grassy, with citrus and lemon notes as well. Nice acidity with citrus flavors dominant. Develops a smoky undertone with air. Guessed CA Sauv Blanc.

  • 2009 Heitz Cellar Sauvignon Blanc 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Pale color. Aromas of lemon and florals. Soft acidity, with citrus and grass tones on the palate. Guessed Suv Blanc, no guess on origin.

  • 2009 Château de Thauvenay Sancerre 88 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    Pale color. Aromas of flowers, grass and citrus. Lemon oil, grass and citrus flavors, with good underlying acidity. Guessed Sauv Blanc.

  • 2010 Materra Sauvignon Blanc 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District

    Light straw color. Aromas of citrus, grass and mineral; lemongrass. Nicely balanced, with citrus flavors dominating the palate. Good level of acidity carrying the fruit. Has a richness to it, as if there was a touch of Semillon added in, however it's 100% Sauv Blanc. Quite nice, most tasters liked it; some thought it to be from Bordeaux. 89-90 pts.

Flight 2 - II. Reds. (6 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Prieuré-Lichine 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Crimson color. Opens with a funky earthy quality, then develops clay, rhubarb, tar, herb and red fruit aromas. Balanced, with cherry and red fruit flavors, ending with herb and earth qualities. 90-92 pts. Guessed cab-based Bordeaux.

  • 2008 Château Haut-Bergey 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Decanted about 2.5 hours then rebottled for travel. Tasted about 4.5 hour after it was initially opened.

    Inky purple color. Aromas of black cherry, currants and smoky dark fruit; has a jammy quality. Sweet tannins; flavors of plum, vanilla and dark fruit. Finishes a touch hot.

    One taster thought Bordeaux, the rest of us settled on CA Cab. Not one I will be buying again.

    Crimson color. Aromas of herbs, red currants, berry, smoke, incense, tar and perfumed dark fruit. Well-balanced, with flavors of dark fruit, earth and herbs. Guessed Bordeaux.

  • 2004 Eponymous Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Deep color. Opens with an aroma of bacon fat which gives way o cassis, blackberry, herbs and vanilla. Maintains a smoky undertone. Balanced, with flavors of dark fruit, herbs and red berries. Long finish. 92+ pts. No guess.

  • 2006 Eponymous Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Dark crimson color. Aromas of incense, black fruit, smoke and vanilla. Balanced, with a nice mix o red and dark fruit and herbs. Long finish. guess: Cali cab sauv.

Flight 3 - III. Reds. (5 Notes)

  • 1997 Château Haut Lagrange 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Dusty ruby, bricking toward edge. Notes of tea leaf, herbs, cherries and briary red fruit. Light-bodied and a little thin, with washed out cherry and red fruit tones. No guess.

  • NV Avio Barbed Wire Red 70 Points

    USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County

    Holy shit, who put a port into the lineup!? This is hot; lots of alcohol and it's hard to get past that and find much fruit- on the nose or the palate. Has some chocolate and dark fruit qualities, but the alcohol level is definitely an issue here.

  • 2007 Maroon Cabernet Sauvignon Maroon Vineyard Coombsville 92 Points

    Crimson color. Aromas of cherry and red fruit, bouillon, and cassis. Full-bodied, with sweet tannins and flavors of currants, cassis and black cherry. Spicy oak undertones. Dark fruit persists on the finish.
