Introduction

This started out as a meeting to exhange some wine and evolved into a last minute mini offline. No specific theme, just bring something good you want to drink. And as usua,l it turned into a really fun evening with some outstanding wines.

Flight 1 - Bonus Starter Wines (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Sainte-Eugénie Corbières Rosé 84 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

    This bottle had been open for several days when I tried it. I didn't get alot on the nose, some mineral and light citrus. The palate was similar in flavors, but I found the palate too bitter. This would be fine with food, but I don't know that it would be a quaffer.

  • 2009 Joseph Drouhin Mâcon-Villages 86 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Villages

    Pale gold with green hue. Drank this blind and I was convinced it was a sauv blanc from the abundance of grapefruit, guess not. The nose has grapefruit and light mineral. The palate was light, some stones, grapefruit, light on acid. Fair.

  • 2004 Domaine Latour-Giraud Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Deep yellow color. Initially I liked this more, but it seem to change rather quickly. There was oxidation, toast, citrus, slightly smokey, citrus, lemon on the nose. The palate was dense showing oak, citrus, lemon, smoke, burnt.

  • 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Pale gold color with green tint. Nose has tons of mineral, citrus, tart. The palate has crisp acid, nice citrus fruit, loads of mineral, good balance, good finish, classy wine.

  • 2005 Argyle Pinot Noir Nuthouse Willamette Valley 92 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Dark red to garnet color. Nose starts off with black cherry, plum, spices, and adds earth as it develops in the glass. Palate has nice depth and concentration, good dark fruits of black cherry, plum, raspberry, some earth and mineral much better balance than the last time. Quite lovely. 92+pts.

  • 2001 Ridge Home Ranch 94 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Gorgeous dark purple red color. Nose is fantastic, very complex with creme de cassis, blueberry, earth and truffles, spice, wildflowers, and vanilla. The palate is consiistent, and is truly elegant in the mouth, and follows with a long finish. This is an outstanding wine. Clearly the first bottle was no fluke. This was the unamimous WOTN. I only wish i had more. 94+pts. Addendum: day 2+ adds coffee and blackberry liqueur and a bit of meat to the nose and palate.

  • 2003 Bodegas Poesia Poesia 92 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo

    Black purple color. Blend of 60% malbec and 40% CS. Very nice nose with blackberry, cassis, spice and earth. The palate is dense, balanced with black fruit, earth, and spice, cocoa, and some oak. Very good. 92pts.

  • 2006 Deer Ridge Vineyards Petite Sirah Private Reserve Estate 88 Points

    USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley

    Dark purple color. Interesting nose of funk, earth, somewhat herbal, muted black fruits. The palate is fairly full bodied with some loamy earth, black fruits, and herbs. I found the herbal aspect of this a little too much for my tastes.

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Medium gold color. Great nose, with peaches, apricots, honey, perfume, florals, fusil and mineral. The fruit is dazzling on the palate, adding citrus to the peaches and apricots from the nose, mineral, fusil, viscous in the mouth, acidity is good, long fruit driven finish. This is outstanding, great balance, and the sense that more is in store down the road.

The hands down, unamimous WOTN was the 2001 Ridge Home Ranch Bordeaux Blend.
