Shafer, Beaucastel

I was home alone and after a long day of yard work, I sat down to watch Iron Man 2 (good but not as good as the first one). I started with a Hoppin' Frog Red Scotch Ale which was excellent. Currently my favorite brewery although I prefer the BORIS. Then I decided to open some nice wines to drink. I had some nut and cheeses to go along with the wines. Both bottles were 375's.

• 2007 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 94 Points

  USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

  This wine keeps getting better. Just a delicious wine and the best vintage of this, by far, that I have tired. Great texture. Silky and juicy. Aromas of cassis and raspberry pie filling with some oak notes. On the palate, this is lush and complex and each sip begs for more. I have not tried the Hillside yet, but if this is any indication. Just delicious and then the bottle is empty.

• 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Still too young. The nose takes some coaxing but has some depth. Clean and just a hint of funk. Very tightly wrapped. I popped and poured this from a 375, but a decant is in order. You can feel how well made this is, and there is so much going on, but it is not obvious. Continue to wait.
