2008 Red Burgs

This was the June tasting of my tasting group. We were curious given the seeming swell of support for 2008 red so we did the only thing we could do. We forced ourselves to try some of the wines.

• 2008 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Guettes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

  medium deep purple color. Red, crunchy friot notes. Very pure, velvety. Transparent, very lovely. Swells in mouth, long finish. Initial note of vanilla blew off. Not an oaky wine at all.

• 2008 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

  Piercing nose of space and crushed red berries. Iron/mineral finish. Lots of material there, but like an iceberg, this is showing a small fraction of what it will be with age.

• 2008 Domaine Dublère Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

  Spicy, floral (azalea, rhodyedendron) nose Cinnamon, red candy, again spcie notes. Medium weight, very transparent palate. Slight stemmy note on palate. Palate got simpler with air, nose remained lovely.

• 2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  Velvet. Crushed red berry, black pepper nose. tons of structure and acid, cuts off the finish a bit. Surprisingly accessible though for this producer and vineyard.

• 2008 Domaine d'Eugénie Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

  Light red expressive nose. Mint, licorice, fennel brilliant, intense floarl notes, again in the rhody/azalea range. Light, more ethereal than powerful.

• 2008 Jean-Jacques Confuron Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Flawed

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

  Off bottle. Very oaky under a ton of reduction.

• 2008 Domaine Dujac Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

  Slight vegetal nose. Fine tannins, medium red fruit, bit reductive. Not impressive given the domaine. OK... but... underwhelming

• 2008 Lucien Le Moine Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  VERY nice wine. One of my faves of the night. Sweet, sappy very open knit red fruit nose. Very expressive. Plenty of fruit to match the acid structure.

• 2008 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines Vieille Vigne

  Disappointing given all the hype around this producer. Nice but reticent, correct, transparent but no real complexity.
