Introduction

Tasting featuring the wines of Domaine de la Tournelle of the Arbois, Jura. Winemakers Evelyn and Pascal Clairet work their 7 hectare estate organically and biodynamically, growing ploussard, trousseau, savignin, and chardonnay. Some wines are vinified sous voile, others in a "topped up", more reductive manner, all with little or no added sulfur. The Clairets are friends and colleagues with such Jura winemakers as Overnoy, Puffeney, and Ganevat, and their wines possess all the mystery, quality, and distinctiveness of those legendary vignerons.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine de la Tournelle Arbois Trousseau des Corvées

    France, Jura, Arbois

Transparent as rose-water, the lightness of color belying a gorgeously full nose of tart red and white fruits, all bramble, pepper and earth, with a gamey, woodsy, near Burgundian depth that's repeated, deepened, and emphasized on the palate. Prickly, tensile acidity carries the wine to a savory, mouth-watering finish. Wildness married to a refined, brooding fragility.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Tournelle Poulsard Arbois L'uva Arbosiana

    France, Jura, Arbois

Sans soufre bottling from young vines. Transparent, very light cherry rose color. Fresh fruit and a light jamminess on the nose, with a slightly bready quality, like a tiny croissant with a smear of strawberry jam. On the palate, clean pure notes of rosehips tea and pomegranate perched on a vibrant, crystalline, carbonic-like frame.

  • 2008 Domaine de la Tournelle Fleur de Savagnin

    France, Jura, Arbois

Spectacular nose of yellow and white flowers, honey, apple, and a touch ciderish. On the palate, tart grapefruit, green apple, peach, and a sort of floral, citric Belgian ale quality. A pleasingly oily texture against an energetic acid-mineral backbone, richness vs raciness that plays out through the long finish. Not unlike a Lopez de Heredia blanco in its very slightly oxidative character and incredible expressiveness.
