Introduction

Pizza, wine and high school friends from Black Forest Academy's 2001 graduating class. What a way to spend a Friday night. It was great to get together with everyone, and the food and wine were spectacular. Saturday night we went to dinner at Mandu in Washington, DC, where the food and service were impeccable. We drank these wines over the course of the weekend, and had a great time.

    fresh nose of lemons and grass. acid is fresh, rich apple and pear fruit. great when paired with korean appetizers.

  • 2009 Tahto Chardonnay 87 Points

    i'm by no means an impartial observer of this wine. my friend stephen and i crushed these grapes by hand with an old fashion basket press. we were helping out our friend wayne, who owns tahto wines and gets all the real credit for this wine. but i was still thrilled to drink it. the nose showed some buttered toast, which made me think it might be too oaky. but the palate had lively acid and a lot of bright citrus flavors. the lemons, lime and a hint of herbs made me think of sauvignon blance. the buttery flavors are well-integrated.

    as far as dependable and inexensive rieslings go, this one is hard to beat. crisp acid, sweet lemon lime flavors and a long finish. this wine was a crowd-pleaser.

    aromas of leather, tobacco and stewed fruit. smoothe tannins on the palate. this is al ighter-styled wine, despite the hot 07 vintage, with crisp red fruit and lots of tobacco and earth. a great pizza wine. i wouldn't recommend holding onto this wine for too much longer.

    this blend of carignan, grenache, syrah and cinsault has aged beautifully. the nose is a gorgeous blend of aged red aromas: leather, raisins, truffles. the palate is smooth as silk with refined tannins and medium acid to keep it fresh. the mouthfeel on this wine is gorgeous. this wine was definitely voted wine of the weekend. unfortunately, it didn't last long.

    I first tasted this wine out of barrel and loved it. it was so dark and rich. it has smoothed out a bit since 2009, but it still has solid tannins and lots of dark fruit. the acid keeps it balanced and fresh. this went so well with korean beef.

    this is a great example of aglianico. lovely mushrooms and sage on the nose. spicy acid and lots of red fruit and herbs. a spicy kick to it

    this is always a solid malbec, but this vintage even more so. dark and plummy with silky tannins.
