Introduction

Our annual July 4th celebration at Kelly's. As usual, we had a fantastic time with family and friends. Our fourth 4th without Doug who is still sorely missed.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Torbreck RunRig 97 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Wow. A simply fantastic bottle of wine. Torbreck never seems to let us down. We opened this and decanted for roughly 3 hours. The nose just poured out of the glasses. Someone walked in the kitchen and said "Wow! What is THAT great smell?". A beautiful blend of blackberries, a hint of bacon smoke, sweet vanilla, and finishing with more dark fruits. The body was incredibly balanced -- rich, deep fruit with perfectly balanced tannins. The finish went on for 60+ seconds. The WOTN without a doubt.

  • 2007 Robert Foley Merlot 91 Points

    Opened and decanted for 2 hours. This had a conflicting nose and was different from the last bottle. A certain "greeness" showed up (like unripe tomato or pepper) and then evolved into a more traditional nose of cherry, dark pitted fruit and a hint of wild strawberries. Everyone noticed a prickling of high alcohol on the nose. The body was definitely better than the nose -- black currants, blackberry jam, and cream soda. The finish showed the alcohol again. We enjoyed this wine, but it was simply overwhelmed by the Hundred Acre.

  • 2006 R Wines Grenache Chateau Chateau Chateau 84 Points

    This wine never really caught on with anybody. THe nose was the best thing about it -- deep rich fruit that unfortunately was overwhelmed by a blast of alcohol. From there it went down hill. The wine was simply a monolithic fruit bomb -- something you might add ice to and make it a wine cooler. Not sure what the alcohol level was on this, but was way too extracted for our taste. A reason why some Australian's have lost their popularity and why people question Jay's scores. But to each his own.
