Introduction

Six of us got together at last minute to drink some mature Bordeauxs.

Flight 1 - A bubbly and whites (4 Notes)

  • 1995 Château Valandraud 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Always a crowd pleaser. Not much change in the past two years. Pop and pour, expressive nose, coffee, mocha, caramel. Excellent concentration and silky palate. Fully matured but will last for awhile. This and the 96 La Mondotte represent the best examples of matured garagiste movement wines.

  • 1998 Château Valandraud 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Significantly more youthful than the 95, Faryan mentioned the highest cab franc % and it shows. Green pepper/burnt ash, bitter chocolate, not unlike the 98 Pavie. Drinking well but will improve.

  • 1990 Château La Conseillante 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Fully matured, very fresh, bright and delicate fruit expression especially next to the two Valandrauds, crushed blackberries even 20 years later, flower and perfume. Silky sensual palate and thirst quenching. Another example of palate uplifting wine. IMO, La Conseillants are fresh, delicate and have earlier drinking windows.

  • 1966 Château La Gaffelière 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Fully matured and starting to fade abit. Completely tertiary, plum, mushroom, wet autumn floor. A hint of oxidation and abrupt finish.

  • 1986 Château Talbot 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    The wine that I have loved in the past. Pop and pour, one of the most youthful example of the line up, little hard and rustic, big scale wine. It became expressive at the end of the night. An excellent example of St Julien. This and the 82 LLC would have benefited the most from decanting. The second youngest showing after the 82 LLC.

  • 1982 Château Léoville Las Cases 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Will this wine be ever ready? The crumbling cork concerned me a bit but the wine is correct and youthful. A hint of plum, some red and blue fruit, cedar but the nose is still tight. Excellent concentration but somewhat one dimensional still.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Poyferré 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Wow, what a spectacular wine, incredibly expressive from the start, ripe fruit, kinky sexy wine, some extremely sweet balsamic note, still generous fruits, fresh tobacco, complex nose. Excellent concentration, silky palate and bright acidity. The wine that I wasn’t familiar with but need to seek some. A great wine!

Flight 4 - sweet (1 Note)

Closing

It was a low key but fun evening. All the wines showed extremely well. The early Sunday wine dinner was quite enjoyable.
