Introduction

Moore Brothers featured a tasting with 4 Domaine Rion 09 wines. The Chambolle-Musigny Les Beaux Bruns was probably the wine of the flight, but overall all the wines showed very well. Higher acidity and with a nice fragrant and floral nose. The Clos Vougeot, on a price basis, was probably most disappointing as it was double the price of the next closest wine. It certainly was not 2x better than the next closest wine.

  • 2009 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Chambolle-Musigny Beaux Bruns 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

    Very Chambolle in character. Nice lush nose. Fragrant, floral. Red fruits with a touch of earthiness. Raspberries and bramble. Sharp and acidic on the palate with incredible minerality. Very nice lingering finish.

  • 2009 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Le Vaucrain 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

    Peppery nose. Red fruit with a hint of darker fruit on the nose. Fruit was a bit lighter and watered down on the palate. A bit washed out on the finish. The nose was the star hear, as the wine lost some oomph on the palate and finish.

  • 2009 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Grandes Vignes 90 Points

    Nose was the star here. Considerable step up from the Vaucrain, in my opinion. The nose was lush with red and blue fruit. The palate was a shade disjointed and lost some focus. Nice acidity. Once this becomes a bit more focused, this has real potential. Should drink well for years. Good stuff.

  • 2009 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Clos Vougeot 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    A bit disappointing. This may evolve into something better. Right now, it has sharp acidity and brighter red fruit. But overall, I thought it lacked some depth and concentration. A nice little mint tea component on the nose here. All the Rion wines had that menthol component in some form or another. Some Clos Vougeots can be excellent, some can be good and some can be down right disappointing. This is a good wine but probably does not justify the sticker price.
