Introduction
Jeff had a layover in Vancouver on his way back to LA so a few of us who have posted on the Squires' board over the years got together for a dinner with wines from the Rhone.
1998 Le Brun-Servenay Champagne Vieilles Vignes Brut 91 Points
France, Champagne
Medium lemon in colour. Nice toasty nose with charred lemon and apples. As it sat it glass it developed yeasty and smoky notes which were very nice. Softer mousse with great acidity and a nice finish. Drinks great now but could develop for a long time further. Excellent. 91+

2009 Le Vieux Pin Viognier Roussanne 88 Points

Pale lemon colour. Very floral nose, beautifully delicate with light tropical fruit notes and hints of citrus. A very feminine nose. In the mouth the fruit carries from the nose with good acidity and the finish has a slight bitter/austere thing going which I enjoy. Very good.

2005 Alain Voge Saint-Péray Fleur de Crussol 87 Points

Medium lemon colour. Nice nose of baked yellow fruits and hints of caramel. Flavours of apple and fried bananas with nice acidity. This bottle wasn’t as good as the previous bottle Coop opened 18 months ago. Still a nice wine. Good.

1998 Delas Frères Hermitage Les Bessards 92 Points

Darker red in colour. Youthful nose of dark red fruits and iron with hints of pepper and floral. In the mouth it’s still quite youthful with medium acidity and firm tannins. Hints of smoke and some pepper coming through on the lengthy finish. Very nice to drink now but only showing a portion of what’s to come—needs 5+ years. Excellent. 92+

1990 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 93 Points

When I first opened this wine it was dead—tasted and smelt completely oxidized and over the hill. I was tempted to dump it out and grab a different bottle. Instead, for the sake of science, I double decanted it back into the bottle and let it sit opened for 4 hours before leaving. When it was served an hour later at the restaurant, I couldn’t believe it was the same wine. Medium red with some browning near the rim. Beautiful nose of developing red fruit, black pepper, leather and earth with hints of game and vegetal funk. Complex and very enjoyable nose. In the mouth it has a light, delicate and almost silky mouthfeel with nice acidity and some fairly subtle tannins. Gamey and sweeter red flavours with hints of tobacco on the medium length finish. Drinking perfectly now and while this won’t fall apart anytime soon, it’s not going to get any better either. Outstanding.

2000 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve

Dark red in colour. This is a massive wine. A big pronounced nose of black fruits, spice and black liquorice. Enormous in the mouth with concentrated flavours and lots of drying tannins. There is noticeable alcohol on both the nose and palate. Too sweet, too pruney, too much alcohol and jammy character. Just not my style.

1989 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 94 Points

Medium red in colour, showing some bricking at the rim. This has a gorgeous and fully developed nose of barnyard, sweeter red fruits and funk with gamey and floral notes too. Very complex. In the mouth it’s got a pure entry with a silky and supple mouth feel and sweet and resolved tannins. Meaty and red fruits flavours with smoke and olive tapenade coming through on the long and smooth finish. My WOTN. Outstanding.

2008 Le Vieux Pin Syrah 88 Points

This had an unfortunate position following the ’89 Jamet, but showed well nonetheless. Youthful medium dark red colour. On the nose this offered riper red fruits which carried well onto the palate with clean flavours and a lengthy finish. Good structure. Needs 3-5 years. Very good. 88+

1991 Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Les Ruchets 90 Points

This had a nice, slightly rustic nose, with blacker fruits, blood and pepper. It’s soft in the mouth with good acidity and a rounder finish. This is quite round (maybe even polished) in the mouth for a Cornas although Bill said it was a tannic beast on release. At peak and holding. Excellent.

1995 M. Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Les Granits 88 Points

Medium to dark red. Developing nose of sweeter red fruits, mocha and hints of Rhone funk. In the mouth it’s well balanced with slightly rich flavours, solid acidity and medium tannins. For me this got better as it sat in the glass. It’s drinking fairly well now, and while I don’t think this will ever become a classic northern Rhone (blood, meat, etc.), I think this would benefit from another 3-5 years. Very good. 88+
