Introduction

Bill Randolph had bought all or most of these wines at release and they have been properly stored. They were handled very gently in preparation for this tasting so they wouldn't be stressed before opening and tasting.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1992 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

DRC tasting. Red fruit on the nose with a mild dose of DRC spice. Less prominent red fruit on the palate. Wine didn't seem completely harmonious with some noticeable oak hanging around and a bit too much acidity on the finis.

  • 1992 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

DRC tasting. Highlight was the spicy nose that showed classic RSV even if a bit muted. Also aromas of red cherry and some forest floor. Lacy fruit, certainly elegant but short and simple. Seemed to gain a bit of weight with more time in glass.

  • 1992 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

DRC tasting. Very faded color gave me some concern but the spicy and perfumed nose put any concern to rest. Not much fruit on the nose, just some forest floor to go with the classic aromatics. Fruit was not as interesting as everything that accompanied it - black and white pepper, dried tarragon, allspice, nutmeg and mushrooms. Lots of acidity was both good and bad - good that it provided length and texture, bad in that it was rather noticeable and not completely balanced. Frankly I don't know if this is wine getting old or still needing more time.

  • 1989 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

DRC tasting. Elegant floral nose that also showed black fruit and spice. Big black fruit on the palate at first that softened over time. wine really kept changing on the glass, taking on more and more nuance over time. Spice notably became more pronounced. Of all tonight's wines, this one clearly has room to improve (perhaps only showing as 92-93 tonight) and should last for decades if stored as well as this bottle..

  • 1976 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

DRC tasting. Dried rose petals on the nose with exceptional red cherry and big, complex spice. For its age this showed amazingly fresh fruit, which was at least as prominent as the secondary character. Both the fruit and mushroom flavors expanded with more time in glass. My WOTN, almost everybody's WOTN. Note: owner had purchased wine on release and stored it correctly since.

  • 1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

DRC tasting. Still had good color and nose. Aromas of dried red cherry and rose petals along with some smoky elements. Palate had same red cherry, a fair amount of spice and lots of sous bois. This fell off significantly after about an hour in glass.
