Introduction

I guess I was in the right place at the right time, plus I had just done a favor for one of the guys at Christie's. There was a pre-auction tasting scheduled showcasing quite a few vintages and wines from the Hospices de Beaune. I arrived early and was invited to another room with only three bottle that had been decanted.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1997 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    Bright red and black fruit come out both aromatically and on the palate. Black cherry really stands out, along with pomegranate, dark chocolate and black currant. Wine came across as elegant and lean, without the length and density that can make a great Cabernet special in the longer-term. I don't know...perhaps this was an imperfect bottle, but after I finished tasting these wines I checked my notes vs. my friends from Christies' and we were in alignment.

  • 2002 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    Really intense fruit with great depth and complexity. Sensational perfumed nose. Flavors of black currant, bitter chocolate and blackberry. Fruit is balanced perfectly with the tannins and acidity to create a seamless, wonderfully integrated wine. Long finish highlights great black fruit and some interesting spice. Really wonderful wine but it will sell tomorrow for well over $1,000/bottle at auction and I'm not sure it's that wonderful...at least for me.

  • 2003 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    Lovely and accessible ripe fruit from start to finish. Dark berry to start with charming bittersweet chocolate near the end. Interesting spice elements give this some nuance, but the ripeness (and lack of structural backbone) makes me fairly certain this won't have nearly the longevity of the 2002 tasted alongside. Moderate length.
