Introduction

Our friend will be posted to the state for 3yrs and here we go, a farewell dinner with a set of really good wines. Bon Voyage and all the best to TK.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

  • 2006 Lindis River Pinot Noir 83 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Lake Wanaka

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Very sweet and broad aromas consists of floral, game, candied red cherry fruits with mineral. Rich and showy with its candied fruits, simple. Creamy mouth feel with mineral infused finished with short - medium length.

Flight 2 - White with 1. Cold Alaskan King Crab and 2. Alaskan King Crab meat steamed with egg white and chinese wine (3 Notes)

The crab wasn't really good, lack a bit of fat and sweetness and the meat is a bit rough too. Lesson told us that we only ordered the seafood when it is in season. The Champagne paired quite well with 2. while the Riesling paired ok with 1.

  • 1996 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé 89 Points

    Very light golden with green tint. Pretty shy but it is intense, delicate and fresh: yeast, fresh herb, floral and framed the white and yellow fruits. Blessed by the exceptional 1996 vintage, this BDB is still a baby. Structured and intense with impeccable balance of sweet and subtle healthy fruits, soft but firm acid backbone. Built up in the mid palate and going strong on the finish, structured and still very tight with mineral and citrus lemony finish. This has a promising future. Give it 5yrs time. 89-91

  • 2009 Schäfer-Fröhlich Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs

    I had read so much about this producer: A rising star in NAHE hence i decided to kill this. Opened for 8hrs. Expressive on the nose with floral, red fruits, sea breeze and salted mineral infused aromas that summed this intense, highly focus aromatic profile.The palate is rather tight and disjointed. Powerful entry and mid palate with complex, sea salt like mineral that give the complex mouth feel. However the finish is kinda disjointed, dropped off from the mid palate. This continued developed in the glass and became juicier but still, not expressive and disjointed. Will not cracked the next bottle at least 3yrs time.

  • 2002 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Medium golden color showed some aged of this. Creamy vanilla on the nose with fresh mineral, oyster shell, slate and fresh herb. Rich and creamy on the palate that is well balance. Loads of sweet citrus and stone fruits underpinned by the ripe acidity. This is a bold, powerful Chablis that has very good round, polished mineral that formed the creamy mouth feel instead of the usual sharpness that drive to the rich, quite powerful finish with vanilla aftertaste. While this is delicious now, it will be better in another 3yrs time. 88-90

Flight 3 - Burg with steamed bamboo clam & roasted peking duck (1 Note)

Bamboo Clam, another let down as it is a bit fishy and not juicy/tender at all. As usual, red burg with roast duck is simply stunning.

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 91 Points

    Wow, this displayed the essence of the Pinot: Perfume, elegance on the nose and palate. Expressive, seductive aromas of sweet red fruits, some fresh herbs intermixed with alluring wood spice and earthiness, very feminine. Rounded, layered with good sense of purity, elegance with its exuberant sweet fruits, good acidity spine framed by polished package. The tannin is well integrated and absolutely silky, while this didn't has the Grand Cru intensity, instead, it offered Grand Cru like harmonious that leads to highly persistent, spicy infused finished with mineral, tea leaves nuanced that lingered. Real delicious.

Flight 4 - Bordeaux blend with roasted peking duck (2 Notes)

    Ok, does this wine really aged? As the color is still pretty dark and the wine doesn't show much of its aged. Sweet blackcurrant, cedar and tobacco on both nose and palate. The ripe tannin is well integrated but still pretty firm. Velvety mouth feel, still rather powerful, mouth coating intensity with medium length finished that's gained some more weight here. This does show the pedigree of a Dominus. 88

  • 1990 Vieux Château Certan 89 Points

    Popped and Poured and this display very good drive, energy and gained more power towards the finish with some tannin bite, a really good VCC that showed very elegance profile with good purity of sweet fruits, leather, sweet tobacco as well as perfume floral scents. I was very surprised that the wine evolved so fast in the bottle and when we served, it faded rather quickly in the glass! I'm not so sure if the condition of the bottle or just the wine itself. But it was a very good VCC for sure before it faded. 89

Flight 5 - Italian with deep fried lamb rack and noodle with chinese sausage (3 Notes)

A set of really high quality italian wine that still incredibly young and have very promising future. Food pairing was very good too.

    The nose is highly intense and complex: Ink, blackcurrant, leather, game with perfume floral scents, herbs and anise at the background. Full bodied, highly concentrated with almost mouth coating intensity yet remained lush, light on its feet. Still rather primary with all sorts of sweet dark fruits: blackberry, plum as well as raspberry that bring out the lushness of the wine that well-buffered to the sweet tannin. Well delineated. The finished is long and juicy. Very delicious now but this will only get better and better in the bottle. The problem is: can you resist? 91-93

  • 1998 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 91 Points

    A little bit pungent on the nose, sweet currant core surrounded by tar, Incense and floral scents, pretty good but still a bit shy. I'm actually pretty surprised on this wine, I thought this will not be opened for business but i was wrong. Though very powerful, this actually has the softness to it that allow us to access. Strong sweet currant fruits, medium level of ripe tannin bite with firm backbone. Very powerful and spicy mocha, tar like finish that is long and complex. No where near the plateau and I will give this wine minimum 5-7yrs to develop more secondary nuances and layered. 91-93

  • 2001 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Vigneto Bellavista 90 Points

    Oh my, what a powerful and stubborn Chianti Riserva, breathed for few hrs and still hard like a rock on the palate. The nose indeed very subtle and fragrance with leather, tar, floral, blackberry and earth. Massive but very fine tannin and structured dominated the palate with underlying depth, power. Tightly coiled but very elegance and the lively acidity given lightness to the wine. Finished is firm, long with blackberry and leather aftertaste. Another 7-10yrs at least. 90-92

Flight 6 - Dessert (1 Note)

  • 1976 Baronesse von Gilsa Müller-Thurgau Beerenauslese #3 84 Points

    A.P. 4 324 133 3 79. Dark golden in color. How often will one come across with a 35yrs old Muller Thurgau? Soft and sweet, but focus. Quite straight forward, with dried tea leaves, sweet apricot and mineral. This actually has hint of inner perfume but overall this is not a wine with good intensity, but yet, this is still possess good freshness and precision. Short to medium length finish.

Flight 7 - Extra! (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Lafite Rothschild Carruades de Lafite 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Popped and poured and this actually very expressive and drinking well. Definitely a Pauillac with the tell-tale aromas of intense pencil leads, creme de cassis, blackberry intermixed with violet and roasted herbs, good complexity. Clean, sleek and intense palate that showed good purity and very polished. The pencil leads, floral and black fruits dominated the flavor profile. The intense tannic but polished backbone lends a good grip on the palate with detail, powerful finish. A very well made Carruades but not necessary with good depth or class that matched with the extravagant asking price. 87-89
