Introduction
About a week ago I met Bernard de Laage from Palmer at a 1982 Bordeaux Imperial dinner in SF. He told me about this Palmer dinner in the Chicago suburbs, organized by Sam's, which I was interested in attending but didn't feel like driving. Bernard graciously offered to share his ride which was taking him from Sam's store on North Avenue to the restaurant, then back to his downtown hotel. I gladly took Bernard up on the offer and his "ride" turned out to be driven by Todd Hess, Sam's Wine Director, and his wife Veronica!
1990 Château Palmer 89 Points

Open, decanted two hours. Black cherry, plum and cassis with some smoke and spice. Fruit seemed a little ripe, even almost over-ripe. I would probably prefer having this with less time in a decanter. At a very good place today, I don't expect more upside.

Open, decanted 2 hours. Black cherry on nose with good spice. Still a bit of oak spices on nose and palate, most notably quite clear vanilla character. Still quite tannic and structured as well. Doubt this will be getting much better.

Dark black fruit throughout. Mostly cherry and currant that are very refined but not completely accessible behind the tannins. This is rather nice today, but I'm a bit concerned where the fruit will be as the tannin and structure soften and integrate.

Very good aromatics of black fruit, cigar box and spice. Comparable fruit on palate, not great intensity or depth but very good texture and elegance. Accessible for a 1996 Left Bank. Very good balance and acidity.

Nice aromas of black cherry and some baking spice. Same fruit and spice on palate. Very good textures and acidity. I'd like to se more complexity, but think this might put on more weight with another 3-5 years in bottle.

Lush nose of plum, black currant, good florals. Fruit a bit closed to start, opens more in middle and finish. Spice opens up as well. Structure is firm for now, so I'd give this another 5 years to really show its full potential.

Smooth and charming even if a bit simple. Flavors of blackberry with a bit of chocolate. Sweet and silky tannins at a vey nice place now. Short, pleasant fruit. Drink in the next couple of years.

Friendly nose of moderate black fruit and spice. Flavors of red cherry, black cherry and plum. Simple finish and length.
