Introduction

Nicely put together lineup with Carole's help.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2009 L'Ecole No. 41 Sémillon 89 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (8/22/2011)

Nice wine. Golden yellow color. Ripe tropical fruit nose with apricot and pear. Palate, smooth, roung, with a waxy feel—really coated the palate. Even acidity to keep thing together, and a moderate finsh with more ripe fruit, mineral, and chalk. Well concentrated.

  • 2009 Ross Andrew Winery Pinot Gris Celilo Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, Oregon/Washington, Columbia Gorge

    (8/22/2011)

A nice summer wine. Refreshing and light with bright acidity. Light, floral nose. Palate has a burst of citrus, tropical fruit, lemon zest and green apple. Held the palate with a mineral crisp finish. Solid buy.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Tamarack Cellars Cabernet Franc 90 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (8/22/2011)

Big sweet red fruit nose. Cassis and currants with a mild liquor-like quality on the palate. Finishes a little simple and clipped. Doesn’t’ have the complexity of the Barrister, but lovely forward red fruit profile without being heavy or jammy. Some spice adds interest as well. The cab franc’s were strikingly different in style.

  • 2007 Barrister Winery Cabernet Franc 92 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (8/22/2011)

Lovely complex nose, with a slight herbal/vegetal note, hints of pepper, toast and espresso—all with a little black currant in the background. Red fruit on the palate, chewy tannins, plenty of spice, leading into a lengthy coffee and toast infused finish with plenty of dark fruit to carry it. Healthy dose of toasted oak, but has the fruit to carry it. Unexpected hit. My WOTN, group #2. The cab franc’s were strikingly different in style.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2007 J. Bookwalter Merlot Foreshadow 84 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (8/22/2011)

Overdone, roasted nose with cedar spice and plum, and a lot of heat. Palate has some nice red and dark fruit, but hard to find with the strong vanilla, coffee note and again, more heat. Strikingly out of balance and over oaked. Consistent with my prior note—shame as there seems to be good fruit underneath.

  • 2008 Gifford Hirlinger Stateline Red Walla Walla Valley 88 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

    (8/22/2011)

Nose was a little shy and generic, with coffee, spice, red fruit. Palate was nicely ripe, showing cassis, wild berries, and currants, with coarse tannins in the background. Medium length finish shoing mocha and toast. Rather generic as I think the multiple varietal blend leads to a rather generic blend without a sense of place. Great score for the price though.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 88 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (8/22/2011)

Decanted 2hrs prior to serving. Big nose with overwhelming oak notes—lots of spice, toast, currants underneath and touch og heat. Dark fruit profile on the palate, smooth and round with little tannin, and loads of sweet vanilla that overwhelm the finish. Has nice concentration and seemingly has solid fruit underneath the heavy oak treatment, but was surprisingly simple in this lineup. On day 2 the oak was more integrated, so there appears to be hope for this, but does not appear to be aging as well as I hoped since my last bottle 2yrs ago. Wine Spectator was nuts for calling this WOTY. Still, not a terrible value for $20 but the Ste Michelle was much fresher and more complex.

  • 2006 Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon Canoe Ridge Estate Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills

    (8/22/2011)

Sweet oak and currant nose with a touch of mocha. Palate is smooth and round, with chalky tannins and nicely concentrated dark fruit profile. Finishes strong, with a touch of sweetness to the black currants and mocha flavors. Easy to sometime forget this producer, but a solid mid-level cab that was well above the Columbia Crest on this night.

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Gorman Winery Syrah The Pixie 90 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

    (8/22/2011)

Served slightly above cellar temp. Big nose, with violets, pepper, and meat on the nose. Palate was a line of sharp acidity, ripe purple fruit, and fine tannins. Lengthy finish is mared slightly by heat that increased as the wine warmed, but still showed a lovely spice, mocha, and fruit filled finish. Seemed a touch overdone and lacking a little complexity for the “size” but an enjoyable syrah.

  • 2006 K Vintners Syrah The Deal Sundance Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Wahluke Slope

    (8/22/2011)

Served at cellar temp. This was much more together than the last bottle, but probably because it was not compared to bdx and served slightly colder. Big, sweet nose with wild berry, raspberry, currants and mocha and touch of ornage peel. Palate was smooth rich and round, with ripe fruit that added a sweetness to thier spice and pepper character. Finsihes with repeated pepper, toast and espresso. Has a rather smooth mouthfeel, with a slightly hollow bitterness that comes though when approaching room temp. Drink at cellar temp when in the mood for a "big" highly concentrated wine. Group WOTN
