Introduction

Another sensational opportunity to taste with Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, proprietor of Bonneau du Martray. I learn more about white burgundy from the times I have tasted with Jean-Charles than I have with almost anybody else. He is also a charming and wonderful person.

  • 2008 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Tasting at Domaine. Really exceptional wine. Powerful fruit to start, with lots of ripe peach and lemons on the nose. Peaches start you off on the palate, with the citrus returning near the finish. This is a big wine with lots of power and density. I know I've had some bad luck with moderately oxidized bottles in the US (never in Burgundy) so hope these last as long as this early tasting would imply.

  • 2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Tasting at Domaine. Citrus mostly on nose, flavors show apple and lemon. Much more acid driven than the 2008 just tasted. I like this wine, but frankly prefer the 2008 right now. This will need more time to lose some rough acid-driven edges.

  • 2009 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Tasting at Domaine. Interesting 3rd wine after the 2008 and 2007. Shows some the ripe fruit aspects of the 2008, with some peach an apricot on both the nose and palate. Just not as intense as with the 2008. Same profile comes through on the palate, although probably just as much rich fruit as in 2008, just much less acidity and minerality coming through today.

  • 1989 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Tasting at Domaine. Jean-Charles was such a gentleman to open a bottle from this great vintage, one I've enjoyed several times from Martray. This showed nutty aromatics with rich ripe fruit on the nose. Same fruit followed through on palate, with just a trace of honey. Fruit holding up beautifully for its age. I'd never have guessed this bottle was 20+ years old.
