Introduction

And it's back up to the UP for this version. No, springtime isn't the prettiest in the upper peninsula, but it was what worked

Flight 1 - night 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer 91 Points

    France, Alsace

    (3/18/2011)

nose: lush and fat nose of pears, apricots, tropical citrus tones, white fruits and loads of spice tones

taste: full bodied with medium+ acidity and fat tones of orange peels, pears, apricots, tropical citrus tones and loads of spices

overall: this was listed as indice 3. Definitely showed the residual sugar but it was far from sweet. This was tremendous for being an entry level gewurztraminer and could also use a couple of years

  • 2004 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (3/18/2011)

nose: meaty and dark nose with deep tones of dark red cherries, charcoal, smoke tones, dark red berries and bits of bacon fat. Pretty tight though but showing off a lot of promise

taste: polished and suave medium/full feel with medium+ acidity. Deep, but with some chewy tannins and balanced tones of dark red cherries, smoke tones, dark red berries and bacon fat tones

overall: this was decanted for about 3 hours and consumed over 6, it was still on the tight side towards the end. Needs a good amount of time still, but there is a lot to like down the road

  • 1998 Mauro Veglio Barolo Vigneto Gattera 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (3/19/2011)

nose: plush nose of dark red cherries, licorice, roasted herbs, mint tones, various spice tones, and bits of rose petals. Excellent depth and forward on the nose while being balanced

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins with balanced tones of licorice, dark red cherries, spice tones, and bits of rose petals

overall: This was a real pretty barolo. Well balanced, it showed well after being popped and poured but it could've probably used a decant

  • 2004 G. Fluteau Champagne Cuvée Prestige Blanc de Blancs 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (3/19/2011)

nose: crystalline and defined nose of oyster shells, white fruits, mineral tones, almonds and bits of fresh picked citrus tones

taste: fresh and pristine medium body with medium+ acidity. Balanced and crisp with defined tones of white fruits, minerals, and a good amount of fresh picked citrus tones

overall: Yet again this is a lovely bubbly at a great price. Well balanced with a real freshness to it and nice depth. This seems like it can age for a little bit, but is very enjoyable right now

  • 2004 Boudreaux Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, Washington

    (3/19/2011)

nose: balanced and pungent nose of cedar, dark red cherries, cassis, dark red berries and some hints of floral tones. Very good depth with an expressive side to it as well

taste: medium bodied with medium acidity and sneaky tannins that still show the youth of the wine. Balanced with good depth and plush tones of cedar, dark red cherries, cassis, leather and a touch of floral tones

overall: This was a straight pop n pour. It needed some air to get going, but was really good once it did. Balanced with good fruit to it with good depth on both the nose and palate. The finish is a little bit clipped though

  • 2007 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

    (3/19/2011)

nose: plush and forward nose of blueberries, red cherries, coffee, red and black currants with tones of dark red fruits. Good depth and pretty open from the get go

taste: full bodied and real plush with silky tannins right now. Balanced with good depth and forward tones of blueberries, red cherries, chocolate, red currants and a lot of dark red fruits

overall: This is forward without being over the top. well balanced with a real plushness to it on the nose and palate, this could be very interesting when it sheds some of the baby fat
