Introduction

The Lieu-dit Cru, my Chicago-based Burgundy group got together for a new dinner format for our group. This "blind white" format is an expansion on how we typically start our dinners with two related bottles of white Burgundy, served blind. In this case, there is one theme for the evening but only 2 of the 10 people provided the wine so knew the theme. Everybody else was double blind from the start.

Flight 1 - Champagne to start (1 Note)

  • 1988 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 94 Points

    France, Champagne

A very civilized way to start the evening. Tasted incredibly fresh with nice citrus elements at the outset. Traces of yeasty character were just starting to emerge on the finish. Wonderful wine. Not as rich as the 1990 DP but this is showing similarities to the (surprisingly good to me) 1993 I had last year, but this 1988 just showed far "more" of everything good.

Flight 2 - Demoiselles to start (3 Notes)

  • 1988 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Showed some mustiness to start, which dissipated after about 15 minutes and then (briefly) showed some floral aromas. As it opened it also started showing some honeyed character, which became increasingly oxidative with more and more air. While not over-the-hill, I'd be drinking this soon.

  • 1995 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Pleasant wine that was nicely structured with lots of energy. Good fruit and well balanced, it just didn't fully show its Grand Cru pedigree, particularly when tasted next to the 1996 Demoiselles in the next glass. In many ways it was similar to the '96 but just shorter and simpler in almost every way. Tasted blind, Ken thought this wine was from the same vintage and producer as the '96 but from a lesser vineyard.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Powerful and spectacular wine. Massive amounts of fruit with great acidity and energy. Floral aromatics followed by great rich fruit, supported by powerful minerality that elongates the finish. Kept improving over 2+ hours, taking on more and more depth. We had some concern about the wine given the vintage's problems with oxidation, but there were no problems with this bottle tonight. One of the finest white Burgundies I have ever had.

Flight 3 - Demoiselles in the middle (4 Notes)

  • 1989 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

My WOTN, I think this was drinking better than its 1996 counterpart even if it doesn't have quite the same potential going forward. Ripe fruit all the way through. Lots of power alongside a charming mouth feel. Great minerality added length and more more texture to this wine. Flowers, acidity, fruit and minerality - what more can you ask for? Perfect balance, much like its '96 counterpart. At its peak now, but this didn't fade at all over the course of several hours.

  • 1989 Louis Latour Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Tasted blind, the Latour showed more ripe fruit and heat than its Jadot counterpart in the next glass. An interesting minty character on the nose with similar traces on the palate. Lots of fruit but I don't think this wine ever fully absorbed its oak, as it showed clear flavors of vanilla and caramel. Still quite fresh. Most of the people at dinner thought this to be 5-10 years younger than its actual age.

  • 1998 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Much like the 95 and 96 paired in the first flight, this 1998 and the 2000 in the next glass showed similarities but were just at different class/quality levels. This 1998 showed nice fruit and good acidity to start. However there wasn't as much minerality as in other vintages tonight. Good fruit, but short and simple finish.

  • 2000 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Another great wine, clearly opened and consumed too young tonight. Lots of rich fruit with an exciting character. Flavors of peach and pear with really good spice. Not quite as good as the bottle our same group had last year, but still powerful and energetic. Like many of the other vintages of Jadot Demoiselles tonight, great floral aromas lingered all night.
