Introduction

Entirely by chance, we happened to bring wines that provided interesting comparisons. It helped that nothing was oxidized or otherwise ruined.

Flight 1 - Whites (2 Notes)

Another interesting Dauvissat/Raveneau face off.

  • 2002 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Light yellow. Starts out classically lean with iodine and sea shell, then fattens up and shows much more flesh in the manner of '02. Grand Cru texture if not nuance. Excellent but not the most electric example of this wine.

  • 2002 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Chapelot

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Light yellow, almost exactly the same color as the Dauvissat of the same year. Lactic, anise aromatics-quite fascinating. Rich, creamy and long, clear imprint of the wood. More impressive framing your expectation as white Burgundy rather than Chablis.

Flight 2 - Reds (3 Notes)

Negociant flight-two superb Jadot Beaunes followed by a younger Drouhin Grand Cru.

  • 1990 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Chouacheux Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Deep, robust color for age. Medicinal, chocolatey ripe cherries to start. Fairly big wine that lost fruit and became more tannic over time. Better right out of the bottle than with some air.

  • 1990 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    A shade lighter and a step less weighty than its Beaune stablemate from the same vintage. At the same time, more immediately developed aromatically with pine tones and perfume but great persistence and growth in the glass as well. Really lovely Burgundian perfume. Fine acidity for a 1990, and in fact, it gained focus over time. Perhaps the red-tinged fruit is just beginning to fade a bit, but in the end, this is finer and more elegant than the Chouacheux. Probably at its peak, but I see I said the same thing about a bottle 3 1/2 years ago! What do I know??

  • 2002 Joseph Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Deep ruby. Whoa, what a sexy nose of smokiness and tart cherries. Still pretty young and primary. The "griotte" nature of the fruit carries through to the palate. Excellent acidity that really put the two 1990 wines into perspective. Tannic and dense for a Charmes. Wonderful but only a fraction of what it will be if held for 5+ years.
