Introduction

Dinner organized by my friend Dan Flagstad who generously contributed the 1991 LaTache.

Flight 1 - White (1 Note)

There was another similarly aged white Burgundy DOA that I didn't write down.

  • 1983 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Bottle seemed in good condition. Rich, dense fruit with some spice on nose. A reasonable amount of oxidation on nose and palate. Fruit showed a bit of interesting caramelization. Short finish but with a good deal of charm. Others liked this better than I did.

Flight 2 - 1971 (4 Notes)

  • 1971 Domaine Clair-Daü Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Amazing nose - rich, spicy, meaty...very alluring. Dark fruit flavors to start with great power on long finish. Flavors and smells of roast meat. Starting getting shorter and more compact after about 30-40 minutes in glass.

  • 1971 Domaine Grivelet Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Dark color, just some bricking on edges. Good fruit on nose and palate. Cherry and raspberry equally balanced with mushroom and leather aromas. Good spice also on nose and palate as well. Still lots of structure, I know it makes it easy to wonder if this is 100% Pinot Noir. None of us could say for certain, but we could certainly say this was one fine bottle of wine. Second time I've had this (from same source) in the past few years. This was my last bottle.

  • 1971 Camille Giroud Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Tannic, acidic, not enough fruit.

  • 1971 Maison Leroy Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Floral nose shows some dried rose petal behind more substantive earthy aromas. Flavors are subtle and elegant. Red fruit is there behind mushroom. More interesting than exciting, with a moderate finish that still showed a fair amount of red fruit.

Flight 3 - 1991 (4 Notes)

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Impressive spice box was evident as they just started pouring the wine. Roses, cinnamon, clove, fennel and allspice. Rich red fruit on palate with incredibly density and concentration from start to finish. Spice comes out even stronger again on the finish.

  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Much better than I remember this wine from before. Great floral character on the nose, just a step behind the 1991 LaTache also served. Massive red and black cherry flavors. Great baking spices keep unfolding and evolving in the glass, making this one of those wines so much fun to revisit every ten minutes to see what has emerged...until there's nothing left in glass.

  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Vignerondes 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

Great black fruit on nose to start, along with big spice. Fruit was less concentrated on palate, then started fading after about 30 minutes in glass. Spice was never as clear on palate and also disappeared rather quickly and without warning.

  • 1991 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

Never fully opened on the nose, but plenty of dense black fruit on palate. Right now the wine remains highly structured and not fully accessible behind tannins and acidity. Better with rich food that helped break through the wine's acidity, I still think this wine has the substance to be quite interesting around 2020.
