Introduction
A tasting for International Tempranillo Day of samples provided by TAPAS, the tempranillo trade group.
Flight 1 (7 Notes)
We started off with an Albarino from Spain and then moved onto the six Tempranillo samples.
Closing
The top wines for this tasting, among our group, were the 2005 Bodegas Paso Robles Viva Yo and the 2007 Dubost Crianza.
2009 Camino Las Rias Rías Baixas
Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
Tropical fruits on the nose and palate. Lemons on the nose as well. The bouquet is big and fragrant. Also picked up some butter notes. Overall, quite good. The wine lacks a little bit of acidity or bite up front but more than makes up for that with acidity and crispness on the finish.

2005 Bodegas Paso Robles Viva Yo

Huge nose, with fruits that color the steakhouse aromas that predominate. The cabernet in this blend is quite apparent. Also picked up some butterscotch, some earth, and a tad bit of heat on the nose. Quite a complex bouquet. On the palate, fruits including raisins and plum feature, along with butterscotch and caramel notes. This wine had a lot going on, but the sum was slightly less than its parts.

2007 Dubost Crianza

Second in line for our Tempranillo tasting after the 2005 Bodegas Paso Robles Viva Yo. This one had less fruit on the nose; those that were evident were under-ripe and dark. The palate was much heavier and featured dark chocolate, with restrained, under-ripe fruits as well as some savory characteristics and some pepper. This wine was more profound than the Viva Yo and ended up being my wine of the night.

2007 Folin Cellars Tempranillo

Butter and chalk on the sizeable nose. Sour plums and sour fruits on the palate, with acidity throughout. Pretty darn good wine.

2008 Bokisch Vineyards Tempranillo
USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
Cream and butter coat the dark, sour fruits on the palate. I also picked up some raw meat on the nose, and even some sweet fruits at the end. Overall, a quality wine -- fruit forward and very smooth.

2008 Ripken Vineyards & Winery Tempranillo El Matador Ripken Vineyard

Decanted for a couple hours. Heat covers the dark, cooked fruits on both the nose and palate. High alcohol all over this one.

2008 Berryessa Gap Tempranillo

Decanted for a few hours. Fruits dominate in all three stages. Sweet fruits predominate on the nose, then dark fruits coated with sweet characteristics on the mid-palate and finish. Quite accessible.
