  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    It's always a treat to have Krug as so far it is one of the few Champagnes that I truly enjoy the style. Round and full on the palate with citrusy intensity and not excessive acidity plus a tinge of sweetness. Very fruit driven with a wow factor from the mouth presence. Simply delicious. I could gulp this down the whole day.

  • 2005 David Leclapart Champagne Premier Cru L'Apôtre Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 85 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    Fizzy despite being opened for a while. Smooth on the palate. Quiet style. Lean and elegant as opposed to Krug. Definitely can see the breeding here. A drinking wine.

  • 2005 Didier Dagueneau Silex 84 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

    Compared to the previous one I had this was readily identifiable as a Sauv Blanc and a rather new world-ish one at that. Sure the intensity was tongue-staining with sharp acidity and a definite minerality spine. Oily texture on the palate too. However, somehow this time round the wow factor was not there. Good but not very good considering the pedigree.

  • 2004 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

    I am quite at a lost on how to describe and rate this wine as I'm pretty sure this is an "off" bottle not truly representative of what a Demoiselles can be when it is "on". Yet it wasn't bad to the point that you could not taste any semblance to greatness here. Color was golden. Nose was quite ripe at the beginning but mellowed into something buttery over time. Above average extract and stuffing. Did not get much character out of this to be sure but one thing is for sure. This is definitely a fine Chevalier, but this example was not a great one.

  • 1996 Verget Corton-Charlemagne 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Forgotten I've had this one before. Layered and perfumed nose which immediately shouts look at me. Nose was really good and seductive, almost a ringer for a Montrachet-family grand cru. Palate perhaps a step down but still with great persistence and good presence. Great balance despite the above average acidity, testament to the vintage. Plenty of life in it. Might lack a bit of a character to be utterly memorable but still an outstanding wine all the same.

  • 2002 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Clean and definitely mineral driven but with adequate fruit to make it a tasting wine. No rough edges at all. Still very young. A wine of grace and balance without thundering weight. Definitely is in the style of Raveneau. Outstanding in its quiet confidence.

  • 2000 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    The Valmur was quite austere and definitely built on a core of minerality. Stunning intensity on the palate and drinking rather well now. The purity is outstanding and can only be from Chablis. A medium bodied cuvee with a definite class to it. Not an especially ripe tasting example from Raveneau.

  • 2006 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 87 Points

    Built along the lines of total minerality this is definitely a hard-core example from Dauvissat. Essence of rock sums it up well and definitely terroir-driven. Austere in the flavor profile yet fresh and vibrant in terms of the sharp acidity. For masochists only, in which case bump the rating up 5 points.

Flight 2 - Red (7 Notes)

  • 2009 Thibault Liger-Belair Moulin-à-Vent La Roche 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

    Dark, slightly purple-ish. High-toned nose of dark cherries and hints of rose petals. Concentrated on the palate yet with proper structure to hold it up. Unmistakably a Gamay varietal although I would not call this the most pure example around. However, this did have a unique class to it in terms of complexity and definitely a wow factor. Balanced. Outstanding example of a Beaujolais and rivals many wines from the Côte de Nuits. I would love to revisit this in 3-5 years time.

  • 2007 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs 90 Points

    One word. Pure. Totally unadulterated from any oak or over-ripeness. This is a supremely classy effort which brings to mind what Burgundy is all about. Not a very structured wine. In fact it was rather soft and giving yet not flabby either. Young and primary as expected but certainly enjoyable now. I don't see much upside in aging this further as it is so drinkable now, especially if your palate leans towards young Burgundies.

  • 1996 Château Trotanoy 84 Points

    One of the least Pomerol-like Trotanoy I have tasted (not that I have tasted a lot though) so in terms of distinctiveness this is somewhat lacking. Seems dominated by Cabernet fruit without the lushness and seductiveness. It's not a bad wine, just that there's nothing particularly interesting about it. Doubt it will improve with age. Definitely not a good representation of what Trotanoy can be so I would not recommend this to casual buyers unless you know what you are in for.

  • 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild 89 Points

    Not drinking so well at the moment due to the tightly knit structure and tannins. Unbelievably primary even from the color from the rim. Probably will be outstanding in 10-20 years time but at the moment, not yet. A wine of pedigree but needs much time to shine.

  • 1966 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

    If there ever was an essence of Pauillac this would be it. Every identifiable aspect of what a Pauillac should have is here in its most bare-bones. Definitely at its peak now and probably on the slow way down too. Still very enjoyable now but probably time to drink up. Not much words can be used to describe it except I'm glad I got to drink it now.

    Having had the 1998 before this one did pale in comparison. Quite meaty on the nose and still rather tannic. I think this needs more time to mellow down. A bit four square at the moment.

  • 1985 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette 85 Points

    Unfortunately I did not get much out of this wine from the barrage of wines that night. But this definitely score points in the distinctiveness factor as it could only be from the northern Rhône. I would certainly enjoy drinking this elegantly aged wine by itself slowly over a night though as the texture was smooth and secondary characters have emerged.

Flight 3 - Sweet (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay Mr. K The Noble Man 84 Points

    Very very sweet and over over the top. But hey what did you expect from SQN? Thick, viscous powerhouse and entirely primary tropical fruits. At the moment this leans towards a Sauternes rather than a Tokaji in terms of style. Needs age as the combination of young fruit plus sweetness can be excessive despite the acidity.

  • 1976 Reichsrat Von Buhl Friedelsheimer Gerumpel Riesling Beerenauslese 90 Points

    Medium-bodied, elegant but still retains the botrytised sweetness I expect from a BA. Quite balanced. My gut feel tells me I really like this (although I'm a bit at a loss on how to describe it) and I just wish I had more time to enjoy this.
