Introduction

All wines were tasted prior to and then with food. Decanted between 20 minutes and three hours.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1981 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

My first experience with a vintage Bordeaux. Not much fruit on the nose, found earth, mineral, amd smoky oak. Smooth in the mouth with a palate of damp earth, stone and leather.

  • 1982 Château Palmer

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Medium bodied with leather, game and cherry pipe tobacco notes. Silky smooth with a finish of sweet flowers.

  • 1982 Château Gruaud Larose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Initial blast of barnyard funk quickly blew off. Nose of mineral, smoky meat and black fruit. Amazing in the mouth with more raw meat, leather and black cherry. How can it be 30 years old and taste so young?

  • 1986 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Young and tight - and it's from 1986! Red fruit and spice notes with heavy tannins. Plenty of life left and deserves time in the glass if consumed now.

  • 1986 Château Gruaud Larose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Bit of barnyard funk blew off quickly. Wonderful aromas of dark fruit, leather and raw meat. Strong tannins and structure, with blackberry, leather and black cherry on the palate.

  • 1990 Château Clinet

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Mineral, stone and blueberry on the nose with flowers, stone, and smoke on the palate. One of my least favorites of the evening.

  • 1998 Château L'Evangile

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Thick and chewy. Dark fruit, sweet vanilla, and tobacco. I could like this Bordeaux. Still young. Enjoyed this very much - probably second favorite wine of the night.

  • 1995 Château Pontet-Canet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

My favorite wine of the evening. Very structured with heavy notes of licorice, plums, cassis and smoke. Gripping tannins.

Closing

A wonderful evening with new friends. My favorites were closer to new world style than the others. I have a lot of learning to do.
