Introduction
Great opportunity to taste 2009 and 2008 reds and some 2007 with two great hosts - proprietor Martin Prieur and oenologist Nadine Gublin. I previously had the opportunity to have dinner with Nadine each of the last three years at Wildman's annual Chicago visit as part of their US tour. It was great to meet with her this time in Burgundy, as she was stressing the week before harvest.
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Starts with mix of red and black fruit on nose, then mostly red fruit on the palate, seemingly less ripe than the nose might imply. Some real tannic structure introduced itself in the middle providing some real structure. This has good intensity at finish and great backbone.

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Champans
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Great aromas of raspberry and red cherry which follow through nicely to the palate. This wine is already accessible today from barrel, with lots of charm and good texture. At the same time, the finish was long and evolving. A personal favorite today.

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Santenots
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Clearly has lots of ripe fruit which showed more strongly on nose than palate. Fruit was nicely balanced with minerality and acidity, which really support great clarity and length on finish. I frankly preferred the Volnay Champans, but think this wine might have more long-term aging potential.

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes

Tasting at Domaine. Just finished malolactic fermentation 2 weeks prior. Very structured and dense. Impossible for me to fairly assess today.

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. On the more elegant side for Cos Vougeot, with a good balance of red and black cherry fruit flavors, with similar aromatic profile that shows a bit more intensity and heat. Nicely integrated already, I expect this will drink nicely young. I always ask about where producers' vines are located within Clos Vougeot, and Prieur's oenologist Nadine Gublin explains their plot is situated near the top...of the bottom third!

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Interestingly, this was one of the first wines to complete malolactic fermentation, in early spring. really great primary fruit, surprisingly red for a Chambertin. Nose and palate show raspberry and red cherry, which starts rather moderately but picks up great intensity towards the end. Very long, powerful finish with lots of spice. Impressive.

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Echezeaux
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Ripe fruit with Asian five spice blend and soy, showing to me like a Vosne Grand Cru. Great floral charm, then acidity and minerality which keep the ripe fruit in balance. Very impressive length, impressive textures. An exceptional young Echezeaux. No surprise that the Prieur 2009 Musigny was the start of the lineup, but the surprise (for me) was that this Echezeaux gave the Musigny a close contest.

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Black cherry and blackberry on nose and palate. Great fruit to start with really noticeable density and dry extract, balanced nicely with acidity and very fin tannins. Keeps getting bigger and bigger towards the finish. Really persistent. This will certainly be at least a 95 point wine. No surprise that this was the star of the lineup, but the surprise (for me) was that the Echezeaux gave the Musigny a close contest.
