Domaine Pegau Vertical

We visited some friends last weekend and the them on Saturday night was a vertical of Domaine Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee. Dinner was steak au poivre with garlic mashed potatoes and wilted spinach. Finished with a cheese course. The first 2001 that we opened was a bad bottle but the replacement was excellent. Here are my notes:

  3rd time I've had this wine. Decanted for an hour and theput back into the bottle 6 hours before dinner. Dark purple color. Plum, wet earth, pepper and red currant. Smooth texture. 92 points.

• 2001 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée Flawed

  Tomato on the nose with some funk. This was an off bottle. Light brownish red color. Didn't show a lot of fruit. Tart acid. Did not improve even after 8+ hours. Opened a replacement which was far superior. No rating.

  2nd bottle opened at our Pegau vertical after the first one was flawed. Excellent bottle with a very pretty nose. Notes of forest floor, smoke, blackberry and some menthol. Finished as my #2 in the lineup after the 2003. 94 points.

• 2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 95 Points

  Decanted for an hour and poured into the bottle 5 hours before dinner. Purple black color. Part of a 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005 vertical. Firm tannins. Black fruit with sweet currants and light oak. Long finish. Very nice. 95 points.

  Probably the most concentrated of the 4 Pegau's at dinner. Decanted for an hour and poured back into the bottle about 5 hours before dinner. Paired with steak au poivre. Dark black red color. Some tar notes with black currant, cassis and sunflower notes. Needs time. 92+ points.
