Introduction

First stop on the trip. My notes weren't very thorough on most of the 20-25 wines tasted, so I'm only listing a few. Quite a few were reductive and difficult for me to accurately assess.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Camille Giroud Beaune 1er Cru Cent-Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Barrel tasting at Domaine. Intense aromatics, really good fruit on palate, excellent follow-through. Big, intense and spicy for a Beaune 1er. Wine to seek out.

  • 2009 Camille Giroud Beaune 1er Cru Les Cras

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Barrel tasting at Domaine. Sweet fruit, really strong spice. Intense power, minerality come out on long finish. From 90 year old vines.

  • 2009 Camille Giroud Corton-Rognet

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at Domaine. Good floral component to start with big black fruit, fair amount of oak spice comes through for now. Big gorgeous fruit on palate with lots of everything in support - tannins, acid, mineraility - but with the fruit really sensational and prominent. Will take time like all good Corton, but worth seeking out.

  • 2009 Camille Giroud Corton-Clos du Roi

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at Domaine. Dense fruit on nose and palate. Good pepper and spice, fair amount of it from oak that is fairly prominent today. Powerful and serious wine, more concentrated and serious than the Rognets, but less alluring.

  • 2009 Camille Giroud Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at Domaine. Massive black fruit from beginning to end, but very reductive today. Of the reductive wines (including all of the Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin), this wine's really impressive raw materials come through most clearly.
