    France, Champagne

    Apple and pear on the nose, then some good lemon and lemon peel as well. Has that classic yeasty Krug character, but also lots of great acidity and mineraility with rich creamy lemon flavors. Very impressive from start to finish.

  • 1986 Remoissenet Père et Fils Le Montrachet 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Started a little musty but surprisingly fresh fruit emerged within 10 minutes. Aromas of apple and lemon with some roasted almonds. Still lots of minerality, vibrant acidity and energy through to fairly long finish.

  • 2001 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Really impressive. Mint, spring flowers and lemon on nose. Lemon and lemon peel flavors with great minerality and acidity coming through from first taste. Really great spice coming through as well. While not seeming as "fat" as classic Batard, this was really sensational.

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

    Showing plenty of age in color, with plenty of bricking. Aromas show fair amount of remaining red fruit, but more fresh mushroom and Asian five spice mix. Same spice quite plentiful on the palate with mostly secondary character and some primary red fruit in the background. Impressive for its age and vintage.

  • 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

    Gorgeous nose of intense red fruit, great spring flowers, then lots of baking spice. Fresh and dried raspberry and strawberry flavors with wonderful cinnamon and clove spice. Long finish unfolded showing layers of fruit, spice and some wonderful emerging mushroom elements. Seemed to get more exotic and alluring with more time in glass.

    Ripe fruit from beginning to end. Sweet fruit and lots of fun baking spice. Good structure providing backbone, this wine is more fun and enjoyable than either exciting or interesting.

    I know it seems crazy to say a wine I'd rate at '89-90" points is flawed but compared to 3 or4 other times I've had this the past few years it seemed very muted and acidic.

  • 1998 Domaine Leroy Richebourg 96 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    Incredible floral aromatics, showing the style of the great Leroy 1998s. Red cherry and strawberry on nose and palate with sensational five spice blend. Great acidity and minerality give this lots of energy through to the long, intense finish, with again highlights the great spice.

  • 1993 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Red and black cherry on nose and palate. Good spice also coming through in the background on both nose and palate as well. Fruit was well hidden behind the wine's structure today, with lots of acid and tannins front-and-center. This needs another decade at least.

    Ripe red and black cherry on nose with some merging earthy elements. Still a touch of oak standing out. Same ripe fruit on palate with big baking spice component. Lots of acidity and tannic structure, just starting to reach balance.

    Dark fruit with really good spice- cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg - on nose and palate. Really good acidity and minerality give this power and energy through middle and finish. Spice is the highlight, I'd like a little more fruit.

    Ripe red cherry and black cherry with big baking spice smells and flavors. Spice is the real highlight here, with great acidity and minerality providing excellent energy and texture. Lots of ripe fruit make me confident this will last a long, long time and evolve into something very exciting.

  • 1996 Sylvain Cathiard Romanée St. Vivant 94 Points

    Started very closed and inaccessible despite time in decanter. After an hour this evolved into a fragrant spicy wine. Strawberry and red cherry flavors with lots of alluring spice. Really great textures and minerality. Finish lengthens and became increasingly nuanced with more time in glass.
