Introduction

Join us tonight as we meet and taste wines with Chiara Ferraris, of Luca Ferraris Vineyard from Piemonte, Italy for a casual social at L'Uva Enoteca at American Tobacco Campus. L'Uva will be serving heavy hors d'oeuvres on their patio such as eggplant caponata and local goat cheese crostini, wild mushroom melt on baked polenta, rosemary focaccia with bresaola and arugula, and a selection of cheeses and fruits. It will be a floating event, so feel free to wander the courtyard with a glass of Chiara's wine in your hand.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2010 Luca Ferraris Grignolino d'Asti Vigna Del Casot 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Grignolino d'Asti

First wine tasted at the L'Uva Italian Wine Social featuring Luca Ferraris Wines, presented by Chiare Ferraris, wife of Luca. Retails in the $18 range. Light in color; nose & palate of fresh cherries and strawberry preserves with hints of earth and spice. The palate has more tannins than you expect, which actually allows it to pair with cheeses or richer "starting" fare such as creamy polenta. Definite food wine. I have only ever had a few Grignolino in my time as it doesn't often make it to the states, but I thought this was the best example I have had so far. A-

  • 2009 Luca Ferraris Barbera d'Asti 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti

Second wine tasted at the L'Uva Italian Wine Social featuring Luca Ferraris Wines, presented by Chiare Ferraris, wife of Luca. Retails in the $18 range. Nice, bright cherry and berry aromas on the nose, with some hits of oak cream in there as well. Not as earthy as I was expecting, but Chiare says they keep the oak influence to a minimum to showcase the great fruit from their vineyards. Bright cherries and dark cherries carry over to the palate where the oak tannins present hints of earth but also add a nice structure. Acidity is good and overall the wine finishes very clean. Its the "lighter" style of Barbera, and as such it is well made but will not be as complex as the higher end, $20+ Bd'A's on the market. Unfortunately the price doesn't suggest it's role as an everyday quaffer. B+ (note- the wine at the social may have been the 2010 Barbera; I have 2009 in my notes but the program says 2010)

  • 2010 Luca Ferraris Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato Bric D'Bianc 97 Points

Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato, Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato

Third wine tasted at the L'Uva Italian Wine Social featuring Luca Ferraris Wines, presented by Chiare Ferraris, wife of Luca. Retails in the $25 range. I have notes on the 2008 but not the 2009 Ruche from Luca. 2010 is the first year for Ruche as a DOCG wine in Italy. The perfumed nose on this wine is outstanding; like you are walking through a garden full of hibiscus, roses, violets, and cherry blossoms. Cherries and fresh berries in the glass followed by hints of peppery earth and clove-like spice on the finish. Strong acidity and more tannic than you think; lots of structure to this wine. Luca's Ruche is the only Ruche I have had the pleasure of tasting, 3 vintages now, and the 2010 is the best by far. I can't imagine Ruche gets much better than this, and so I have to assign it the coveted WineKnurd A+ rating :)
