Introduction
We had a 10:30 appointment at Chateau Montelena, and since Twomey opens at 9:00 AM, a bit earlier than many other wineries, we scheduled a tour and tasting appointment with Gina Escandon. She was an absolute delight- I strongly recommend that you contact her any time you deal with Twomey. After a pour of the Sauvignon Blanc, she took us through the vineyard where we tasted a few grapes and then moved on to the facilities where we learned how Twomey and Silver Oak make use of the multiple locations. Once back in the tasting room we moved on to the reds. The Pinots were a terrific surprise- I enjoyed them all quite a bit. Gina provided an extra stem for each of us and then poured the 2006 and 2007 Merlots side-by-side. My previous experiences with the Merlots had me expecting overly ripe qualities, but the younger wines were very nice and quite enjoyable.

Our tasting fees were waived and Gina took a few pictures of the group before we left. This was a wonderful visit- highly recommend a stop here if you have some extra time in the Calstoga area, and though appointments are not technically a requirement, I would definitely contact Gina to make arrangements.
2010 Twomey Sauvignon Blanc 92 Points

Aromas of florals, citrus, melon and lemon oil. Racy acidity with lemon, grapefruit and subtle grassy flavors. Nicely balanced. An excellent SB. Currently on sale at the winery for $20, and definitely worth picking up some at that price point.

2009 Twomey Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 91 Points

Ruby color with bright cherry tones on the bouquet and palate. Racy acidity. Medium+ finish dominated by cherry and subtle spice qualities. Not terribly complex, but bright and well-made. $50/btl.

2009 Twomey Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 92 Points

Bright ruby color with aromas of cherry and rose petal with an underlying earthiness. Nice weight and structure on the palate, with good acidity and flavors of cherry, cinnamon and nutmeg. Long finish dominated by red fruit & cherry notes. $50/btl. 92+ pts.

2009 Twomey Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 91 Points

Notes of cherry, florals- rose petals. Lacks the earthy notes of the Sonoma Coast, otherwise quite similar aromatically. Flavors of earthy red fruit and cherries; finishes very well. $50/btl. 91+ pts.

2006 Twomey Merlot Napa Valley 92 Points

Notes of chocolate, black cherry and red fruit. Balanced, with flavors of cherry, plums and cocoa powder. Finishes well with just a hint of spice.

2002 Twomey Merlot Napa Valley 90 Points

This is more like what I was expecting from a Twomey Merlot based on my limited experiences thus far, with a prune/raisin aroma dominating the bouquet, some red fruit underneath. Powerful, with flavors of plum, chocolate and red fruit with a long finish. I don't care much for the ripe notes on the bouquet, so no doubt others will enjoy this more than I.
