Introduction

Danny was visiting from HK and insisted we drink up some of his wines which were going over the hill (by his measure). It was very generous and we had to give him face so we obliged and drank the lot + 1 extra!

Flight 1 - On arrival (1 Note)

We had a complimentary bottle of Lanson to start as Crown had forgotten to pull out a bottle of Dom (which I had cancelled, so very generous) which we chased down with the sister of the pinot. The Chard was showing its age but still an enjoyable kick off.

Flight 2 - Outliers (2 Notes)

As the main event was all about Shiraz these two were a little left out. Personally liked them both a lot but then more my style than the big Shiraz these days.

Flight 3 - The heavy hitters (5 Notes)

The stars of the show! The Run Rigs didn't perform though, general view was a let down, made up for though by the Old Vine and also in my opinion the Godolphin.

Not sure about the nose - smokey bacon. Palates is very small berries with a little pepper.

This was from the year of a lot of bush fires and we wondered if this was tainted.

A little blood and strangely, milk chocolate. Still showing a tannic structure. Chocolate came through later.

Flight 4 - Class in a glass (1 Note)

A generous conclusion (well almost) to the evening which lived up to its billing

  • 2003 Château d'Yquem 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

A subtle honey glazed nose. Palate was a little dry but fills out. Apricots. Almost unctuous.

Flight 5 - One for the road (1 Note)

The obligatory 'just one more bottle'! - 11 bottles in all and only a few groggy heads the next day

Closing

Another good night of fun, food and wine. Thanks Danny, all great wines with some real stars amongst them.

Some of the quotes (I can read) from the night:

I've got ginger gout
I do like......sewage
The d'yquem was quite ......... yellow
