  • 2008 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Dark color. Earthy, gamy nose. Licorice, bright acidity and black fruit. Begins lean in Angerville style but then an oddly tarry finish. Good material but burly for Volnay and clearly not a wine of elegance or seductiveness.

  • 2007 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Light color. Very fragrant nose of flowers and mint. Bright red fruit with a soupcon of acidity sticking out. Some soil on the finish.

  • 2006 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

    Deeper than the 2007. Riper black fruit, lower acid, more material. This has already begun to open, but a slightly prickly tannic finish rudely reminds you that some patience will be required. Still, if I were forced to open one of these 3 young Champans tonight, this would be the one.

  • 2005 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

    Medium ruby. Some aroma seeps out, which is more than you can say about the palate. This is intense and tannic with the fruit completely hidden in the background. All that shows right now is a ton of structure; I can't recall the last wine I've had that was so unpriably closed. Completely unapproachable. Don't even think about opening one of these over the near term. An object lesson in why you want to keep the serious 2005s buried deep within the cellar. Tough sledding right now.
