    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru

    Tasting. Red and black fruit on nose with some dense spice. Same fruit on palate, moderate spice, then somewhat tannic, slightly bitter finish. Good balance of rustic style and fruit-forward 2009 character.

  • 2009 Domaine Joblot Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cellier Aux Moines 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru

    Tasting. Black fruit with good spice hints on nose. Lots of structure, acidity and minerality, all nicely balanced together, impressive for such a young wine. Intense fruit-driven finish today, I'd expect this will really be charming and elegant in 6-10 years. Bigger and more balanced than the Servoisine.

    Tasting. Black fruit on nose with a real meaty character and some barnyard elements as well. Same big black fruit on the palate, dense textures, good minerality.

    Tasting. Ripe black fruit on nose with some red cherry and spice hints as well. Red and black cherry with fresh herbs on palate with very good textures, acidity and minerality. Tannins nicely subtle, this shows at least as much Vosne character as NSG to me. Really impressive, shows its approximate 50% 1er pedigree.

    Tasting. Black fruit and excellent spice and perfume on nose. Black and red fruit flavors come through on palate, with lots of oak and tannins today, so this will need plenty of time to really show its full potential, but there is very impressive wine here. Lots of spice comes through on the end, with a long and powerful finish that keeps picking up steam as it develops.

    Tasting. Red fruit on nose with good spice. Red and black fruit on palate, chewy textures in the middle with some good power, tannins and spice accelerating into the finish. Good energy throughout.

    Tasting. Big black fruit on nose, continuing on to the palate. Good spice in background, but this a fruit-driven wine that also has lots of structure, acidity and minerality that will enable it to develop nuance and complexity over an extended life.

  • 2009 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 91 Points

    Tasting. Ripe black cherry and blackberry on nose along with very good dense, meaty spice. Thick, powerful wine with lots of extract and concentration, seeming somewhat less nuanced than I normally expect from Claude Dugat, or even that his other 2009s are showing today. Very powerful fruit and spice coming through on finish.

  • 2009 Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Tasting. Red cherry on nose with great floral elements and lots of muscular Gevrey spice. Fruit flavors unfold on palate, getting slightly darker, riper and more intense towards middle and finish. Power sneaks up on you, with the finish being the most impressive aspect of this wine. Already showing great balance and integration at this early stage in its evolution, this has some serious upside 10-20 years from now.

    White flowers on nose with aromas of apple and lemon peel. Followed by flavors of lemon, lemon peel and orange peel, but dominated by acidity and minerality. Very racy and energetic. Not for everybody, this showcases the stereotypical character of the 2007 vintage for white Burgundy.

  • 2007 Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot 88 Points

    Very attractive aromas of flowers, candied lemon and ripe pear. Same fruit on palate just simpler than I expected from the nose. Seemingly lower acid than Chenevottes and Caillerets tasted alongside, this seemed to get "smaller" and less interesting with food.

    Apple, apricot aromas along with spice both from underlying fruit and oak. Apricot flavors with some candied lemon peel. Needs some time for the oak and acidity to soften and integrate a little better, but this was quite alluring now and should become even more exciting in another 3-5 years.

    Black fruit on nose, spice more in background. Same dense fruit on palate with lots of tannins and acid, so this needs another 3+ years to fully integrate. there is a slight muddled element emerging in the middle and end that I didn't really enjoy, so hope it's just this bottle.

    Red and black cherry on nose and palate. Good perfumed character on the nose, then some interesting spice and black pepper on palate. Very clean and precise, just a little simpler than I would expect. I hope this picks up weight with more time in bottle. I slightly preferred the 2006 vintage tonight, but it was close, and many others preferred this 2008.

  • 2007 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 94 Points

    Superb spice on nose, showing black pepper, green bell pepper, with some anise just behind lots of black cherry and cherry liqueur. This has some really exciting smoky, earthy textural components that kept getting more and more interesting in the glass. Not everybody liked this as much as I did, not surprising since this isn't a lush modern Cote-Rotie, but a real traditional, classically styled wine that will age beautifully.

    Lush fruit for the vintage on the nose, along with licorice, black pepper. Red and black cherry flavors with very good textures and balance. Most likely best as a young drinking Côte-Rôtie with slightly short and simple finish. Still, incredibly well crafted from a moderate vintage.

    Boysenberry and black cherry aromas with lots of pepper. A very modern styled Côte-Rôtie, clearly identifiable as an excellent Syrah, but I could not necessarily distinguish this as specifically Côte-Rôtie. Charming with slightly candied fruit.

  • 2007 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie Cuvée la Belle Hélène 93 Points

    Ripe blackberry and plum on nose, showing great fruit intensity and lots of licorice, black pepper and some background clove. Also clearly a modern styled Côte-Rôtie, this was also meaty and powerful with elegant spice from start-to-finish that just wouldn't go away. For my palate, I preferred this to the Lancement tonight.
