Introduction

A nice evening with Raffaele Boscaini of Masi Agricola. Wonderful panel of wines showcasing Masi's impressive amarone lineup. I must confess that my allergies were hitting me today. Also tonight was without my beautiful fiancee Daniela, who is really my second nose and has an outstanding palate. Despite the less than perfect conditions, I had a great time with Raffaele and his great wines.

  • 2010 Masi Pinot Grigio Verduzzo Masianco 88 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Venezia

    Pinot Grigio with a kick of Verduzzo for some weight and richness. On the nose there is some light lemon, plenty of pineapple and a nice floral component. Lush and somewhat weighty mouthfeel that sets it apart from other pinot grigios. And even with the weight the palate is clean and fresh. Very nice effort here and I might be undercutting it by a point.

  • 2008 Masi Campofiorin 89 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT

    Dried cherry, some raspberry, dried fruit notes. Some perfume. Medium bodied, med tannins. Some spices. Easy drinking but offers some complexity and interest to wine drinkers. Raffaele informed us that it uses unfermented dried grapes instead of the traditional ripasso pass through the pomace.

  • 2006 Masi Brolo di Campofiorin Veronese IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT

    Raffaele informed us that this is like the Campofiorin, but with increased dried grapes used and the Molinara is completely eliminated, giving an increased share to the Corvina. Mixture of dried and fleshy cherry, violet, some light smoke and perfume and a hint of leather. More complex than the Campofiorin, but is it really worth twice the price?

  • 2006 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Costasera 91 Points

    Excellent! Dried cherry, some fig. Leather and some coffee notes. And the fruit seems to have a chocolate covering. Fleshy, full bodied, high alcohol, high tannins, probably not ready for a couple of years. Complex and deep. Recommend.

  • 2003 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Serègo Alighieri Vaio Armaron 94 Points

    Wow! Deep complex fruits that are much more on the black side nad with plenty of dried notes. Dried blackberry jam, fig, some licorice beautiful notes, and deep earth and leather development. Also a deep raspberry streak. Full, velvet tannins, high concentration, full body, lots of glycerin. Some cigar notes in the background that show a bit on the palate. Long finish. Very complex but still young.

  • 2001 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Campolongo di Torbe 96 Points

    Now Rafaelle is really bringing the heat. This amarone was made from vines on volcanic soil on somewhat flat slopes. A single vineyard amarone. And despite 10 years of age, it is still incredibly young! Dried fruit complex notes, and plenty of interesting spices, like clove, lavender, baking spices, perfume notes and violet. Very subtle notes that are still unwinding. Big on the palate, with a 45 second to minute finish. Feminine counterpart to the masculine Mazzano. Wonderful!!!

  • 2001 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Mazzano 98 Points

    The belle of the night. Raffaele blew the panel away. Masculine barolo of deep structure and brooding notes. Somewhat austere and still incredibly young at 10 years of age. Lots of fig and clove. Subtle complex and exotic flavors that are still tight. Deep fig jam. Deep leather notes. Delicate expensive perfume. Perfect balance, lots of concentration and a very long, complex two minute finish. Awesome amarone that completely hides the high alcohol content. Killer wine!! On a side note, I am surprised that this wine is rated much lower. I have a feeling that amarone does not get quite the respect among the WA guys that it should! And this wine should too! So I will go on a rare limb.
