Despite tired food and decor, this old warhorse still has some amazing bottles on the list.

    Light. Beautifully dry, young, and pure. Ironic that this was so much fresher and pleasing than the younger high end ZH wines we tried last night.

  • 2004 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Medium yellow. Wonderful mineral quality and brisk acidity supporting crystallized orange fruit and a whiff of hazelnut. Someone said Corton Charlemagne; for me, it evoked Meursault. Regardless, this was lively and exciting.

  • 1972 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Magnum. Still medium ruby throughout with sediment. Forest floor, dark fruit and licorice on the nose. All there in a 39 year old wine! Large scaled for Volnay, enduring acidity of the vintage but still savory, long, seductive and strong. We were absolutely amazed with the quality and vigor of this wine, and it did not decay one bit with 2 hours of air. I've had the '64 and '69 Bousse d'Or before but had never tried this. Gerard Potel was making great wines in that era.

  • 1983 Domaine Jean Gros Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Mature looking-clearly lighter than the older Volnay. High toned redder fruit with a bit of volatility. Light weight anise and fruit. Completely clean without any of the taint that can plague '83s, it even retains a gentle sweetness. Marvelous, fully mature. A fantastic surprise.

  • 1986 Château Coutet Cuvée Madame

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    Incredibly light color. Complex, gorgeous aromatics of coconut and grapefruit rather than the usual Sauternes tropical fruit. Astounding balance, elegance and length hold the moderate sweetness in check. Only lightly botrytized. A very great dessert wine and for my taste, as good as Sauternes can get because of its unbelievable restraint and liveliness.
