Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2002 Jacques Picard Champagne Art de Vigne Brut

    France, Champagne

Mid straw with a fine stream of small bubbles. Quite rich and full on the nose, some yeastiness and a touch of digestive biscuit. Very positive attack, bright, focused but carrying some nice weight behind it. Very smooth, slightly cream mid-palate and then a long and positive finish. This is very good indeed. ****

  • 2007 Caroline Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Lovely stuff. Decanted and left at restaurant temp. Mineral, a touch of citrus and a white floral element, but over-ridingly mineral. taut, focused, a touch of richness and colour kept in check by the minerality. very elegant and really lovely. Proper. A new producer to me and an excellent reccomendation from the somellier (and a fair bit cheaper than the options I was considering in the same vein). Top ****

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 2006 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Half bottle. Decanted around 75 mins before drinking. A wonderful match with venison accompanied by chocolate ganache. Mellow, eathy, some chocolate, a touch of meat, good tannin albeit softening, fresh and reasonably long. Very harmonious. ****

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2010 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Straw Wine

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland

Served blind as a challenge after the sommellier had decided that I might like my wine. Deep burnished gold. Gorgeous nose, orange marmelade and a touch of barley sugar. Palate very very sweet but balanced by the most fantastic acidity. Initial thought was Franken TBA (Sauer), 6Putts Tokaji or possibly one of the higher Krachers (if in doubt with a good wine, I usually go old world). These suggestions prompted an 'options' approach from the sommelier. When the first question established this as new world, I nailed it immediately - very similar to the 09 (only other one tasted), but already more harmonious and complete. Fabulously balanced. Incredibly sweet and incredibly long but a wonderful freshness too. This is sublime and a notch above the wonderfull 09. *****
