Served with Sea Scallop w Gingerbread Crust, Endive Marmalade, Mustard Seed Jus
Served with Roasted Guinea Hen Breast w Apple Confit, Crispy Legs w Wild Rice Fricassee, Celery Puree
Light-medium ruby red. Nose of bright cherries, herbs, and bright spices. Smells somewhat stemmy (although Guillaume says they use no stems at all). Very young on the palate - stems, cherry, floral - again bright. Hard for me to evaluate, needs time. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4(+?)/6, Finish - 4(+?)/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14(+?)/20.

Medium ruby (darker than the 08 Champans). Darker nose as well: black cherry, stones, spices, almost creamy. This is a step up from the Champans on the nose. Very tight on the palate, but lots of power and intensity fighting to get out - soaring cherry, mineral, and stones - iron. Just gorgeous really classic - will be excellent. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

Medium-dark ruby (a touch darker than the 08 Taillepieds). Cool, dark, and still on the nose. Mint and flowers - but holding much back. Stemmy and herbal w amazing purity. Hugely tannic and closed - with fine tannins. Showing flowers, minerals, and blood. Really fine on the middle and finish. Nose - 5+/6, Palate - 4+/6, Finish - 6/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16+/20, with a potential 18-19/20.

Served with Roasted Veal Tenderloin w Swiss Chard Ragout, Braised Cheeks, Sweetbreads w Vadouvan Oil
Very stinky and dungy at first (as with all 3 wines of this flight), but this burnt off. Still had a bunch of barnyard, lots of spice, sweet fruit and earth on the nose. Still tight on the palate - sour acid cherry. stems, barnyard and earth - lots of sour cherry on the palate and finish. I found all 3 of these 99 D'Angervilles hard to decipher at this point in their evolution - maybe it was just me. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14/20.

Again, very dungy and wet to start. Again, burnt off some, but did not improve as much as the 99 Champans. Still stinky, with very tight cherry and vitamins. Shows some glimpses of sweetness and fruit, and then the vitamins again on the palate - similar in finish. Maybe in an awkward place right now - disjointed. Judgement deferred.

Was really looking forward to this wine, but like the 99 Champans and Taillepieds in the flight, this wine was quite the Sphinx. It started off very dungy/stinky, and that burnt off, but after that I could get very little from it - dusty tannins and really earthy, but that it is - it was really closed and monolithic. With the 98 Ducs in a later flight, this wine was the hardest for me to evaluate. Judgement deferred.

Served with Cheeses: Abbaye de Tamie, Tete de Moine, Comte (Aged 18 Months)
Light ruby. Completely opposite the 99 Ducs from the previous flight. The nose of this wine came screaming out of the glass - just gorgeous: roses, herbs, sweet cherry, strawberry - very crystalline and precise - like a gem. Purity to the nth degree. Tighter on the palate cherry, tart, and stems. With a little age, when the palate shows like the nose, this will be very very pretty. Nose of the night for me, along with the 64 Ducs. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 4+/6, Finish - 4+/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 16/20 (with a potential 17-17.5/20).

Medium ruby. Wow! Spicy and sweet, blood and iron. Cocoa and mocha - coffee. Really complex and sweet. Very closed on the palate, w dusty tannins. Showing some blood and cherries. Easy to see the potential in this wine - it will be a monument when it finally comes around. Will score this based on the visible trajectory. The most closed of the three 05 D'Angervilles I have had recently (please see my notes on the 05 Taillepieds and Caillerets from Thalassa). Nose - 6/6, Palate - (5+)/6, Finish - (5+)/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = (18+)/20.

Like the 99 from the previous flight, this wine was completely shut down for me - I could not get a decent note on it at all.

Austere nose - tight cherries and acid. Palate: lots of acid. Vitamins, iron and stems. Jesus, this will need lots of time. Again, hard to evaluate.

Serious bricking. Mature on the nose - kaleidoscopic: stinky, sweet, brown spices, meaty - with incredible intensity. Perfumed and toasty. Palate notes start with "Fuck yeah!" - spicy and salty, earthy, dungy. Huge perfume - meaty and bloody. Light dusty tannins complete the mouthfeel and make the wine mouth filling and powerful without weight. A touch of heat in the finish is my only gripe, but that is splitting hairs. Other than that, a long luxurious finish. A revelation. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 19.5/20.

Big nose - pure. Blood and coffee, almost salty. Really 'extracted'. Huge perfume on this - I could smell it for hours. Meaty and earthy on the palate, with plummy fruit. Huge and salty with extract. Lots of backbone and acid here. Not as full as the 64 Ducs, or complex, but really pure. A long, elegant coffee finish. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18/20.

(from Magnum). Somewhat similar to the 64 Ducs - meaty and stemmy. Cranberry and leather - more austere than the 64. On the palate - meaty and earthy with bloody iron. I let this sit in the glass for a while and I think it lost some fruit on the mid-palate. a touch austere. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

(Brought from my cellar). Very deep nose: dark blood and iron. Really sappy and pure. Showing some youth with that salty extract and young 'citrus-zest' fruit aspect. Again salty on the palate - tighter than the 05 Ducs from earlier, or the other 2 05's from Thalassa weeks earlier. Very pure fruit and iron. Dusty tannins - needs lots of time. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4+/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15+/20.

(From Magnum.) Deep, dark nose of earth and barnyard with a sweet sap of red-blue fruit underneath. Some coffee. Lots of sauvage on the palate. Meaty and salty -tannic at end. Tight sour finish, but with good balance - really nice. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 17/20.

Spicy, salty oak - buttered popcorn. OK on the palate - hard after all those reds. Not as good as the 07 or 08. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - .5/2 = 14/20.

Medium gold-yellow. Not as big on the nose as the 07, but finer: spicy, with a coolness - mint or menthol, and some sweet oak and honey. On the palate: lemon, spice and oak. A little tight, quite pretty and precise. Finish is good, but not huge. Showing better now than the 07 in my opnion, and this will drink earlier. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.

Medium straw-gold. Huge nose of oak, vanilla, caramel - lots of salty extract. Again (like the 08), a touch of lemon on the palate. Lots of oak - butterscotch and spice, lemon and acid show on the finish. Fuller in body than the 08, but still focused. Long lemony finish. Will be superior to the 08 but will need some time. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 16/20.
