Introduction

Another splendid do in the Medlar's private room. I thought the white onion soup lovely as was the tarte tatin. Less wowed by the fish and the mallard but still very nice. Service excellent, especially on the wine front - Bravo Clement.

  • 1992 Seguin-Manuel Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

My wine, so not blind. Mid to full garnet with a touch of brick at the rim. A touch volatile and diffuse on the nose - served a bit warm, could have done with being cooler to focus it up a bit. Probably the weakest showing (last of a half case) but it cleans up with air and shows decently. ***

  • 1996 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Dense, quite cloudy dark cherry red. Very fragrant nose, not entirely positive - quite cabbagey. Cali Pinot? Oops! Shows better when transfered from burg to straighter bord glass - a bit cleaner and better structure; far more pleasant. ***

  • 1975 Château Giscours

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Maturing, mid garnet, quite dry but with a slightly madeira cake ripe character. Seems claret-like but persuaded by a suggestion it might be a trad Rioja. No, claret. A bit too light for mid 80s. 75? Yes. Pretty, but lacks real length and depth and persistence. ***

  • 1990 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Far younger, a touch of vanilla spice on the nose. Quite a ripe vintage but relatively light on the palate. Gosh, quite a surprise when revealed - this is an underwhelming bottle in the same vein as the one at the Dom de C Ledbury bash last year. No Graves character and a pale shadow of a bottle 18 months ago. Maybe needed more air (the good bottle had a double decant and then about 4 hours prior to drinking) to put on weight. Anyway, disappointing in it's context. **1/2

  • 1999 Château Kirwan

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Ripe, lush, quite full and sexy. Weight and fragrance makes one think Palmer once 99 is revealed. No. Giscours? Ok, must be Kirwan then. A fragrant and floral quality coming through. This should turn out ok. **(*1/2)

  • 1996 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja Reserva

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

Very dark, dense almost purple red. Quick sniff and slurp and this has modern Rioja written all over it. Remirez de G 94? Ha! Time to retire. Not my style, but **(**)

Closing

Some great guessing and lots of fun. Kudos to Leon for nailing the Chaillots down to the vintage - I felt a failure being a couple of years out on the Remirez! There was half a barsac to finish up and though I have a TN I failed to note the wine itself - I'll add it if anyone can remind me.

Wotn for me, the La Bota followed by the Mouches. Though pretty, I was less taken by the 75 than most (lacking all sorts of depth, complexity and length cf Montrose a couple of weeks back) whilst the Chevalier was a bit of a puzzle - bottle variation or does it just need air to open up (last two at offlines have shown poorly, a previous one with a long double decant, gloriously.

Anyway, thanks to all involved.
