Introduction
Old notes written up from a retailer tasting 10 years ago.
Not sure whether it was at 60 Darling St Balmain (rings a bell) or somewhere else.
It was too damn hot, wherever it was, as some of the notes mention.
1999 Mitchelton Riesling Blackwood Park
Australia, Victoria
Fresh cut-grass aromas; sharply acidic palate with good balance, a little citric fruit sweetness and a long finish. Good wine.

1999 Tyrrell's Vat 47 Pinot Chardonnay
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Melon, paw-paw & peach fruit. Cutting acid finish of medium length trumps restrained oak; medium weight. Grand effort.

1998 Rosemount Estate Chardonnay Roxburgh
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
A nose of lees and oak. Fully worked; smooth and buttery texture; very mouth-filling but not all that pleasant unless you like drinking trees.

1998 Petaluma Chardonnay Bonython

Far too warm to taste properly; fruit seems burnt off somehow. Fresh acid noticeable; hard to make a call here.

1998 Lake's Folly Red Blend
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Seems more cabernet than Hunter, unusually. Plums and blackcurrant fruits, but raw and unfinished texture. Medium-bodied; in context this is fairly elegant and understated. Medium length finish which needs way more time in bottle to mature properly.

1998 St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra

Pleasant youthful blackcurrant nose laced on the palate with medium-strength oak flavours. Strongly tannic, but very youthful still. Should blossom with time.

1998 Parker Coonawarra Estate Terra Rossa First Growth

Also too warm; but finely ripe black fruits are evident in a tight, focussed and authentically-cabernet way; oak is balanced, acid refreshes. Good balance of flavour along the palate, long classy finish. Impressive stuff.

1998 Petaluma Merlot Malbec Cabernet sauvignon Evans and Sharefarmers

Closed nose; some coconut and vanilla. Dark chocolate flavours on the palate; overpowering tannins. Blocky and hefty; lacks integrity somehow. Seems out of balance.

1998 Yalumba The Signature

Overt oak and cinnamon nose in the old-fashioned style. A touch of herbaceous greenness from the cabernet, presumably; tannins are strong and lack polish. Medium-full bodied wine which is a bit country-bumpkin somehow. Lacks balance of better vintages.

1997 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm

Warm mineral and chocolate nose whichc follows through on the palate, adding a spicy note. Tannins surprisingly soft and friendly; gee you notice the comparative lack of impact amongst all these 98 vintage wines. Still, I think it’ll be better in the shorter term.

1998 Coriole Shiraz Lloyd Reserve

Rich purple colour. Youthful nose of vanilla, pepper and oak. Palate of ripe fruit-cake flavours encased in tremendous oak tannins; in the blockbuster style and needs much time. Seems quite well-balanced for its size; there’s hope here.

1998 Jasper Hill Shiraz Georgia's Paddock

Vivid purple/ruby colour. Blackberry fruit aromas & flavours; not too hot, but there’s certainly no question over ripeness. Fine tannins coat all the mouth; this is very nicely balanced across all the palate and has a surprising elegance and restraint about it despite the medium-full-bodied weight. Promising wine.

1998 Peter Lehmann Shiraz Stonewell

A bit warm to taste properly; the remaining aromas are of cloves, spices and deli-meats. Acid is pretty soft, but US oak tannins are sweet and powerful. Big weight on the mid-palate, but still only medium-length finish. Just a touch disdappointed in this, I was, but maybe that’s the difference the correct serving termperature will make.

Closed nose; reticent fruit (served very warm); tannins build to medium weight and eventually swamp the fruit. Hard to say more.

1998 Grant Burge Shiraz Meshach

Pronounced and over meaty/leathery flavours would with aniseed, chocolate and vanilla oak. Friendly loose-knit tannins, good balance, full-bodied with medium length. Not yet fully integrated yet; should drink well early.

1998 Wirra Wirra Shiraz RSW

Big, coarse and youthful. Aniseed and black pepper flavours seem buried under masses of acid and oaky tannin. Not pleasant now, but there’s some hope for the future here due to the sheer quality of the components.

1998 Jim Barry Shiraz The McRae Wood

Vivid purple colour. Inky peppery nose precedes a spicy palate, slightly bitter, with mostly good balance across the palate, but a rather short finish. Some under-ripe fruit here perhaps? Not of interest.
