Hickory Creek Winery Visit

My wife and I decided to take a ride into the country last weekend since the weather was so nice and stopped into the winery for another visit to see hos the winemaking was progressing. Our last visit was in 2008. Here are my notes:

• 2009 Hickory Creek Riesling 83 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  tasted at the winery. 2009 was a cool and wet year and it showed in this wine. Not as good as the 2005 and 2006 vintages of this wine. Dry with notes of pear and peaches. Higher acidity. Because of the low yields and conditions they did not make any Estate Riesling this year. 83 points.

• 2009 Hickory Creek Pinot Gris 85 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  Tasted at the winery. This was better than the Riesling but the acidity was still on the high side. Clear color. Fuller body. Notes of spiced apples. 85 points.

• 2008 Hickory Creek Gewürztraminer 88 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  tasted at the winery. This was the best wine poured. Pricey though at $28. From a better (warmer) vintage. Darker amber yellow color than the other whites. This had a very pretty nose. Typical flavors of canning spices, ginger and apricots. 88 points.

• 2009 Hickory Creek Chardonnay Zero Oak 82 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  Tasted at the winery. Straw yellow color. Reminded me a little of an introductory level Chablis but more tart and austere. 82 points.

• 2009 Hickory Creek Gentil 78 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  Tasted at the winery. This was a semi dry wine. A blend of 65% Riesling and the rest made up of Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A little diesel on the nose. Clear straw color. Notes of white pear. Though this lacked balance. 78 points.

• 2006 Hickory Creek Mélange 84 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  Tasted at the winery. A cooler vintage which gave this wine a lighter body and beaujolais type character. 56% Cab Frac, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. Low tannins with notes of raspberry. 83-84 points

• 2007 Hickory Creek Mélange 86 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  Tasted at the winery. 65% Cab Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. 2007 was a riper vintage than 2006. More body and fruit than the 2006 vintage but still not as good as the 2005 vintage that I tried 3 years ago. A little balloon rubber on the nose. Notes of black cherry, minerals and creme. 86 points.
