Introduction

My first visit to Lignier-Michelot, we tasted in the reception from bottles taken the prior day from barrel or tank (for those already racked). Tasted with both Virgile Lignoer and Russell Hone from Le Serbet, which is always both a treat and an honor.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Bourgogne

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

    Tasting at winery. Charming perfumed aromatics show the 30% whole cluster nicely. Good red and black fruit, somewhat simple, along with nice spice. could be a very good value everyday drinker.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

    Tasting at winery. From three distinct plots (with vines that average 54, 52 and 68 years old. 50% whole cluster. Delicate floral aromatics. Charming fruit, not powerful to start but picks up energy towards middle and finish. Good structure, acids, and textures all the way through. This might be a very good value wine to seek out.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis En la Rue de Vergy

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis

    Tasting at winery. Red cherry and strawberry aromas, then red cherry flavors. Drier, more serious and more structured fruit than the Chambolle, with a hint more minerality.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis

    Lots of lush, ripe red fruit throughout with hints of cocoa. Very accessible already, more fruit than acid, an easy wine for anybody to enjoy young, even if a bit of a fruit bomb (for Burgundy). From three plots that average approximately 50 year old vines.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Bertin

    Tasting at winery. Darker fruit on nose with aromas of slowly braised meat. Black cherry flavors with good spice that pick up weight, density and power on finish. Impressive Villages. Wine to seek out. 20% whole cluster, which seems to be more common in 2009 for Gevrey than I've ever heard before. From 2 plots in Gevrey, which Virgile says each provide unique character to make a more complete wine.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes

    Tasting at winery. Ripe fruit on nose with some pepper, mint and spice. A bit lean and tannic from middle to finish, and this might be showing the effect of having just been racked the previous week, but probably my least favorite of the four Lignier-Michelot MSD 1ers tasted today.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières

    Tasting at winery. To me this was a big step up from the MSD Charmes just tasted. Perfumed nose, already showing the best elements of whole cluster. Starts with wild strawberry and raspberry aromas, flavors then also a bit more red cherry. Great mouth feel and power, this picks up intensity on long finish. I've often found this to be the Lignier-Michelot 1er I've liked the most, and 2009 is no exception. To me, this has serious 91-93 point potential.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Chezeaux

    Tasting at winery. A very interesting wine, seemingly different than the others, Virgile told us this negociant wine was made 100% whole cluster. Intense and perfumed, this came across as having more black and even blue fruit on palate and nose. Seemed to show some heat, Virgile said it was approximately 14.3%.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chenevery

    Tasting at winery. Nice spice and red fruit on nose. Accessible and approachable already, this has goos ripe fruit to start with good acidity, minerality and energy on middle and finish. Something for everybody.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Cuvée Jules

    Tasting at winery. Powerful and fruit-forward with lots of dark red fruit, seemingly a bit less "Chambolle" in style to me. Very accessible and pleasurable, this will drink nicely young.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos Saint-Denis

    Tasting at winery. Perhaps my favorite wine of the lineup, this is incredibly perfumed with lots of nuanced floral along with red and black fruit. Dense, ripe fruit with great balance and textures. The middle seemed a bit awkward, but this was also just racked the week before. 50% whole cluster, 100% new oak. 50% metayage and 50% purchased from family. To me this has 92-95 point potential.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Tasting at winery. Also floral, perhaps not quite as much as the Clos St.-Denis. Powerful and ripe fruit with lots of density and minerality. 80% new oak, 30% whole cluster, mostly Virgile's fruit with a little more purchased from family. To me this has 92-94 point potential and was one small notch below the Clos St.-Denis which seemed a bit longer and more complete.

  • 2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Charmes-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Tasting at winery. And now for something completely different...we're not in Morey any more! Big, chewy wine with lots of massive structure. Dense black fruit on nose all the way through to its long (but slightly tannic) finish. 3 weeks to complete fermentation, this ended at 14.9%. The one barrel was in a one-year old barrel, then racked into a new oak barrel for three months. Give this at least 15 years and I think it has wonderful potential but is much more challenging to assess than the others wine for which Lignier-Michelot is better known.

  • 2008 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Cuvée Jules 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    Tasting at winery. Started a bit musty, then gradually red Chambolle fruit could be coaxed out. Red cherry and strawberry flavors with good acidity and subtle tannins. Bottled in March.

Note to self - look to purchase Chambolle-Musigny VV, Gevrey-Chambertin "Bertin," MSD Faconnieres, Clos St.-Denis and Clos de la Roche from 2009, then some others based on value.
