  • 1979 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Flawed

    France, Champagne

At first I thought badly oxidized. Later others said it was corked. Sad....

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Almost exactly like another bottle opened last week, although that bottle had the Warhol label. Fine lemon and lemon zest start with good energy, the wine didn't have great follow-through or intensity and showed a hint of bitterness near the end.

  • 2006 Thibault Liger-Belair Richebourg 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Good red fruit on nose with moderate level of baking spice to start. Red and black cherry flavors with some clear signs of new oak at first, this wine showed very good spice and also good balance. I wish there were a bit more acid, but that's the 2006 vintage. This was popped-and-poured; when tasted again after open 2+ hours, this showed a longer finish and less protruding oak. Hold to 2015 or later.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cuvée Duvault-Blochet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Lots of ripe red fruit on nose with cinnamon and allspice. Palate was both black and red cherry, quite ripe in flavor, but moderate in intensity. Very fruit forward, then a trace of lean bitterness poking through on finish. I expect this might need another year or two to better integrate, but should consumed within ten years.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Red and black fruit on nose with very good forward floral elements, then emerging spice in background. Black cherry and blackberry flavors with some licorice and allspice, the very impressive heft, acidity and minerailty coming through from middle to finish. Lots of depth for the DRC Echezeaux, with a very serious and powerful composition for the typically ripe 2006 vintage. Well done.

  • 1961 Prunotto Barolo 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Popped, quickly decanted and poured. A tale of two wines...92 or 93 points on the nose showing dried rose petal, black tea with lots of floral intensity and trace hints of red fruit lingering around in the background. Then not much of anything left on the palate, probably mostly disappointing because of the enticing aromatics to start. Didn't change much for better or worse an hour later.

  • 1998 Dalla Valle Maya 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Great nose shows lots of ripe plum and black cheery with volumes of excellent funky cab Franc essence. Palate was much simpler and less nuanced, showing big fruit, but a bit awkward and brutish, most notably on finish.

  • 2005 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I can appreciate this wine and its modern style, but don't prefer this more New World-esque CDP, finding it hot on the finish and correspondingly slightly out-of-balance, but still very well done in its intended style.

  • 1998 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Powerful black fruit on nose with black pepper, licorice and roasted meat aromas. Intense masculine black fruit flavors with great power and concentration. an easy wine to enjoy today, but also see that it will be better in another 5 years, perhaps even better in 10. A great comparison with the more modern, but feminine Ogier 1998 Belle Helene tasted alongside.

  • 1998 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie Cuvée la Belle Hélène 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Black cherry, cassis, black pepper and anise aromas, with a fair amount of new oak still showing through. Black cherry, black pepper on palate with lots of spice. This is a very alluring modern styled Côte-Rôtie that was a great contrast with the Rostaing 1998 Cote Blonde tasted alongside. I wanted to prefer the Rostaing, but couldn't resist and preferred the Ogier tonight.

  • 2001 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Double decanted but it really needed 4-6 hours in a decanter or preferably another 10+ years in the cellar. Impossible to fairly assess in any way, other than point out the obvious incredible underlying raw materials.

  • 2002 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Tasting alongside the 2001 Mouline, this was so much easier to enjoy because it was accessible immediately. Red and black cherry aromas with nutmeg and cinnamon, then some spring flowers in background. Delicate fruit on palate, more red than black, with a very charming sense of balance already coming through tonight. I'm often frustrated that people open Mouline too young, so everybody...here is a vintage of Mouline to open and enjoy young.

Closing

I know I missed a few wines, including the massively large format of Diamond Creek 1984 (vineyard forgotten by me), a very nice 2001 Eiswein and probably a few more.
