Introduction

we got a bunch of sausages from butcher & larder to give us something to munch on with the wines

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2004 Celler Vall Llach Priorat IDUS 84 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

nose: over ripe and a bit over the top nose of black fruits, black currants, liqueur and black cherries

taste: medium/full bodied with low acidity and very chewy tannins. Extremely ripe and rich with liqueur tones, black fruits and black cherries. The palate is a bit unbalanced as well

overall: a decent wine, but quite forgettable if not for notes. This was bordering on being gloppy and was certainly in the over ripe category

  • 2006 Quivet Cellars Syrah Hulda Block Las Madres Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

nose: upfront and forward nose of black fruits, blue fruits, spice tones and blueberry pie tones. Balanced, but lacking some depth

taste: full bodied with good supporting tannins and medium acidity and plump tones of blue fruits, spice tones, dark red cherries and blueberry pie tones

overall: this did come off as a cali syrah blind. On the forward side but balanced with the fruit. This seemed like it could basically just use a 2 hour decant at this point

  • 2004 Quinta do Noval Cedro do Noval 90 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Vinho Regional Duriense

nose: balanced and plush nose of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, cedar, cassis with bits of plums and smoke. Good complexity though slightly lacking some depth

taste: balanced with some hard tannins and a medium/full feel. Good medium+ acidity along with very good tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, cassis and smoke tones

overall: Wasn't sure what to peg this as. Had a very good dark red fruit core both on the nose and palate. This felt like a few more years could easily be given to it in hopes of smoothing out the tannins a bit

  • 2006 Cabot Vineyards Syrah Kimberly's 89 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County

nose: balanced but tight nose with tones of dark red cherries, dark berries, red currants, dark red fruits and a slight bit of heat

taste: medium/full bodied with no noticeable tannins. Balanced and plush with dark red cherries, spice tones, red currants and some dark red fruits

overall: this was very good, but just seemed to be lacking that one last gear. Well balanced with good fruit and plump tones

  • 2003 Le Cadeau Pinot Noir 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

nose: dark and a bit brooding with tones of smoke, dark red fruits, berries, earth and some bits of dark florals

taste: medium bodied with medium acidity. Not too brooding but showing dark tones of smoke, dark red fruits, berries and some dark floral tones

overall: It was fairly easy to identify this as a pinot. Well balanced and doesn't seem over ripe, but does show the heat of the vintage. The finish on this was a bit clipped as well

  • 2000 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon 86 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: comes off as being on the riper side surprisingly, but lacking depth with tones of black cherries, blackberries, anise, graphite and some black fruits

taste: full bodied with some good supporting tannins. Balanced with good tones of black cherries, graphite, black fruits and some blackberries. Good attack, but the wine falls off right after that

overall: this probably could've used some air. It showed itself off as a cab and had a good nose, but it just lacked in depth and on the palate

  • 2007 Shane Syrah The Unknown 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

nose: forward and rich nose filled with tones of red licorice, berries, dark red cherries, blueberry pie and some red+black currants

taste: full bodied with a very plush feel and silky tones of red licorice, berries, dark red cherries, red currants and some spice tones

overall: This was certainly on the forward side, but it held together very well. Upfront but with a real plush quality on both the nose and palate

Closing

I kinda gave up giving full guesses where they were from. We both threw in such forward wines that pinning down regions was too tough. Well, that and we started paying more attention to the games. I can think of worse ways to spend a sunday afternoon
